Weaning tips with lactose/CMP intolerance

I've started weaning DD, 5.5 months, and would like some advice please. I made the mistake of giving her rusk, which didn't have milk listed as an ingredient, and she had a reaction. I then did some research and discovered that they do have CMP. Can anyone recommend a brand of rusk that is safe? I would also welcome recommendations for things like bread, biscuits, cereal, etc that would be safe for DD.
I've become an obsessive label reader and so many things contain milk!

Hi, my son is also lactose intolerent so I understand your fustrations! You have to be very careful about labelling as milk derivitivs can be called lots of other names.
My son was also found to be intolerant to soya which is quite common in lactose intolerant babies.
I avoided rusks and gave him weetabix or porridge for breakfast.I also make lots of his food from scratch were possible so i know exactly what it contains. He eats lots of meat fruit and vegetables and on hospital advice tried him on goats milk which is ok so I have now found a source of yoghurts, milk and butter to use.
If you need any other help and advice just let me know as i seem to have him managing his allergy for over a year now.

Watch for anything in the list of ingredients that says casein, whey, anything that starts with the prefix "lact" except lactic, sadly most biscuits contain at least milk powder so, proabably is beeter to stay in the cereal department and use rice cakes instead.

If your DD is very sensitive to cows milk the chances of her being sensitive to goats & sheep milk are somewhat high, so... watch for signs if you introduce them.

juliek, how old is your DS? I've heard that a lot of children grow out of this. Just wondering about your experience. Weetabix! Now, why didn't I think of that. Will give it a go tomorrow morning. We bought our first baby rice cakes today and DD loves them. I've wondered about goat's milk but will hold off for a bit until we settle into the whole thing. Have you found that your DS reacted to other foods as well. Gave DD some mango today and she developed a rash around her mouth! I can see I'm going to have to be very careful.

Chandra, I've been amazed at the number of baby foods that contain milk powder. I'm going to start making my own purees as it seems to be the safest option. Also going to start a list of other foods DD reacts too (mango being at the top).

Ready Brek is a good one for brekkie as it contains loads of calcium. I used to mix it with nutramigen and then mix in pureed fruit. Now ds2 has weetabix every morning as he hates the ready brek! WHolemeal organic bread is usually OK but does contain soya. Wwen she's a bit older, the finger foods and biccies that are suitable tend to be the Organix ones - gingerbread men, animals, alphabet. Marmite, apple and orange rice cakes are OK. I make big batches of rice pudding with rice dream which is a milk substitute made from rice. Usually find it on the longlife milk shelves or special diet section. THey do a vanilla one which is lovely. HTHs

I thought lactose was a form of sugar?

Anything with casein, whey, and obv butter/cheese listed as an ingredient. I say that, because DD's nursery gave her Macaroni cheese for lunch and the keyworker didnt know it had milk in it Shock. Needless to say she was sacked......but i never assume that people know.....

hi tex111 readybrek was a good one for the lo i look after too and as she got slightly older and had a few teeth rice krispies and cornflakes soaked in whatever milk substitute you use then mashed with a fork also was a hit but saying that purees are great too mixed with a little baby rice .we used rice milk for cereals as she didn't take to nutramigen at all.
also wanted to ad that from looking at labels on food for the last 4 yrs i seem to find cheaper products like tesco value tend to have veg oil instead of dairy in them.

Now that you mentioned about mango... if she has other intolerancies or allergies, it would be wiser to follow the guidelines for weaning for families with allergies:

No glutten before 6m
No citrics, egg, fish before 1 year old
No nuts until she is at least 3 years old.
