Alternatives to Nutramigen?

DD (5 months) has a cows milk allergy or intolerance (still waiting for tests) and was put on soy formula. She now has a problem with the soya and vomits up her feeds and gets a terrible upset tummy. We've been prescribed Nutramigen but she hates it. I've tried half a dozen times and have gotten maybe two ounces in her in total. Must admit, I can't blame her. I tasted it myself and it's disgusting.

We're seeing the GP tomorrow and I'd like to go prepared. I've been reading about Neocate on different threads. What about SMA LF? Anyone used it? Are there any other formulas I should be aware of?

Well, a total of 10oz of Pregestimil today and it's all stayed down so far. There was some spitting up after the second bottle but it wasn't much. DD is asleep now and is calm and comfortable. Not going to get too excited yet but I'm feeling hopeful.

my daughter has nutromigen started her on it two weeks ago. what a battle!!! the doctor kept saying nothing wrong all babies sick. it was only when health visitor saw her being sick after bottle that i got help. felt i was the only mum with a baby which could vomit across the living room.. it has been an eye opener reading all the messages. i wish i found this web site sooner.does anyone have to put gaviscon in babies bottle with milk to keep it down?

Tex111 · 21/04/2006 17:11

Rubies, our very first diagnosis (seems years ago now!) was reflux and we were putting Gaviscon in DD's bottles of Aptimil. It did work in that it kept the vomiting to a minimum. Looking back, I think it delayed the diagnosis of milk intolerance though. Oh well, can't go back now.

Still doing good with the Pregestimil though DD has had some runny poos. She's on antibiotics for a bacterial infection and the doc said they could upset her tummy so the waters are a bit muddied at the moment. She should finish the meds tomorrow and we'll see if it clears up. No vomiting though (touch wood) so I'm still optimistic.

this is all so very hard. my ds2 is 22 months and we still dont really know what he has really been going through. I empathise with all of you so much

Tex111 · 23/04/2006 10:25

Well, it looks like the pregestimil is working. W ehad one setback when DD had some rusk and I then remembered that they have CMP. Seems to be out of her system now though and she's done a really good, healthy poo this morning. Don't think I've ever been so happy to see poo!

I'm just going to start another thread asking for weaning tips for lactose/CMP intolerance. Don't want to make the mistake with rusks, etc again.

That is good news Tex111. Will check out your other thread re weaning. It IS hard, but you will manage. Ask away whatever you want.

Have you tried Rice milk Tex? My ds cant have the soya either. he guzzles loads of rice milk though with no side effects. You can get it with added calcium in Tescos and sainsburys

threebob · 24/04/2006 06:18

Tex's baby is too young for rice milk - it's nutritionally very empty.

Also tex - with all the problems your dd has had do you think you should stop solids until your dd is under control with her new formula?

Tex111 · 25/04/2006 22:23

threebob, I did speak to the GP and paed about weaning as I was holding off until we had a diagnosis. Once DD settled onto the soya I got the go ahead since she was showing all signs of being ready for solids. She loved them and we were doing well when she started reacting to the soya. I can't see stopping now. Did attempt it for about half a day when we were changing formulas but she's so unsatisfied with just milk.

just popped in to say we tried nutramigen which didnt work at all then put onto neocate which with quarter teaspoon of milkshake powder in 7 oz worked a treat.rice milk can be used for a baby as long as you try other substitutes too.
also when we nearly ran out of neocate once and factory were having probs with supply i went into boots to see if i could buy some it's soooo expensive £115 for 400g tin.
