Hi There

my dd was munching on some cheerio cereal, then broke out in raised rash and face swelled up!
Shock so we gave her some medised as it has antihistamine in it...

consulted my 'when your child is ill' book which said we should take her to A&E...

By the time we were seen the rash had almost gone and the swelling to....

what do we do now? will we be referred for more tests to be done? do i need to get her an epi-pen?
cheerios only have a trace amount of nuts... so i am worried what would happen if she had something like peanut butter - would she go in to full anaphylactic shock??? if so, what do i do then?

Please help!

oh what a shock that must have been. If they don't send you or rather your dd for tests rant and rave until they do! Whad did A&E say?

Not sure tests are neded 1st time of reaction. DS1 had an allergic reaction first time he had satsumas about that age. Got piriton from doctoer. He didn't have a reaction like that with anything else. Avoid peanut butter altogether in the meantime - nuts are not meant to be given till age 4 years.
The majority of foods say may contain nuts. My sister's DD4 has epipen and is allergic to nuts. Food companies that make any other products with nuts at all will cover themselves by saying all their products may contain nut traces.
Just keep an eye on what she eats and how she reacts. Might not happen again. Get antihistamine liquid from doctor just incase

was it the ordinary cherios or the nut ones?
How old is your DD can she tell you what is happening?
My ds is allergic to almonds amongst other things and we avoid anything that it is an active ingredient in, and chocolate which is often contaminated, but other than that we take care when thinkg say may contain nut traces.
We have anti-histamine and epipens though. He was tested for all his allergies at the hospital - we got the doctor to refer us over there for testing. the appointment took months to come through so see your GP first and see what he suggests.
Always make sure you have anit-histamine with you just in case you get another reaction and give it at the first sign of a reaction.
You did exactly the right thing though.
The Paed told me that when the face swells then it is possible the throat can too which is when you get full anaphalactic shock so if the swelling involved lips, mouth neck or throat I'd be beating down the door to the GP.
If AS happens you need to call 999 and thell the ambulance it is AS in a child they will have you as a top priority - or get to A&E youself if it would be quicker (we live 5 mins from hospital in car & paed told me to jsut drive asap after giving epipen)

my dd is alergic to tomatoes and gets a red raised rash and her face swells, but thats all it does, this will also go away if i bathe her face in cool water and stop her from eating the food, i wouldnt rush out in a panic and buy an epipen it could just be the body becoming accustomed to it!

but children under 5 i think should not have nuts (whole or crushed on ice cream or cereal for example) so maybe just stear clear until your lo is a bit older. hope that helps!

Hi everyone, thanks for your messages,

Allison, DD is nearly 1, so cannot yet communicate with mummy properly, well not in a way I understand anyway...

we got a prescription for liquid antihistamine which is good, is this the same as phenegan?

her face was all swollen so i got worried that she may deteriorate and not be able to breath! :(

Just meant to add, avoid anything that has arachis in the ingredient list, also check for creams, bath oils, and medicines that may contain it.

Chances are she has reacted to other thing (DS is allergic to nuts but Cheerios -the one in the white box- it's OK for him), but with nut allergy is better to err on the side of caution.

Just want to echo, please get your child tested. That sounds like a serious reaction. Do you think there was anything besides the cheerios that may have caused it.
