Finger food suggestions for an allergic 9 month old?!

Hi,

My 9 month old has numerous allergies and is currently on a dairy, soya, gluten, egg free diet and I'm really struggling to think of any suitable finger foods other than rice cakes!!

It's getting to the stage now where he has begun to notice that other children are eating bread sticks, biscuits, lumps of cheese etc and he isn't!

So would really appreciate any suggestions.

Many thanks,
Lucy

Well, I am quite new to this myself, but my ds (21 months) is on a similar diet. He eats mainly table food and finger food now. You could try the wheat/gluten free bread and toast it. I know that one of the companies do breadsticks and tru-free do a range of biscuits that your ds may like. My ds can eat the bourbons, custard creams and digestives. There is diary free cheese, but my ds doesn't like it. How about fruit or veg batons??

Im not sure of the availability there but Freedom Foods and Orgran do ranges that are allergy friendly. My ds likes the fruit sticks and probably had them from about this age, as mentioned I make all of his bread and a few things out of the Freedom Foods cookbook like, carrot pancakes and corn pancakes which he loves. Fruit is a great coverall in this house and also little felafel patties work well. Again not sure of availability but Aria Farm Beef and Lamb chips are also a hit with our lad. It is really hard isnt it, my ds has respite care and I need to provide lunch 3 days a week and lunchboxes are always a challenge, it is getting easier as he gets older as in he can manage things like grapes and popcorn now but harder in that he really knows he is eating different food to everyone else but hasnt grasped why.

Toasted gluten free bread, cut into fingers?

Stiff mashed potato makes a really good fun food!Grin

Steamed carrot batons, raisins, rice crispies?

Raisins
rice cake
carrot fingers steamed
bits of meat

Speaking as the mum of a 3 year old who couldn't eat any of these at 9 months - he may have noticed at one level that he isn't eating these things - however he's never had them so he doesn't know what he's missing.

Sainsburys do a gluten free pasta - my DS used to have that

Rice?

Cucumber
Cooked brocolli florets
Cooked cauliflower
Lettuce
Apple pieces
Banana
Pieces of pear

Thanks everyone - both for the suggestions and support.

Raggedyanna - I like the sound of the Freedom Foods cookbook. Think I will have to track that down!!! I bought some corn flour yesterday with the thought of trying to make some corn bread so corn pancakes sound fab!!

If you boil a mixture of root veg, add a handful of brown rice and when cooked blend with enough porridge oats to make it a bit dryer then bake low and long in the oven then you have a veg bake that you can offer slices of - can be frozen, re-fried etc. my ds likes this with garlic added.

merryberry · 13/04/2006 09:51

sorry, if porridge oats no good re: gluten, try something like a chestnut or gluten free flour.

raggedyanna · 13/04/2006 11:35

Sorry just double checked and the corn and carrot pancakes both have egg in, pretty sure only as a binder though so may be able to use the egg substitute instead.
