dry bumpy rash - exzema?

expectingsummerihope · 09/04/2006 21:24

For the past 2/52 22 mo ds has had a dry fine bumpy rash (not red)which was all over his body initially but is now mainly on his front and back. It's so dry that when I put cream on it absorbs immediately then feels dry/powdery again. He isn't scratching so I guess it's not itchy. Just baffled as to what it is. Any ideas? A colleague suggested it could be the beginning of exzema. I hope not. Also any idea what I could put on it (over counter preparations)until I get him seen by the GP?

Aqueous cream. sounds like dry skin/ezcema. my dd and ds had similar - dd now nearly 4 and has grown out of it, hope ds will do the same.

Are the spots like goose-bumps (as if hes cold)? My DS has those, mainly on his arms and legs. HV just thought it was dry skin and gave me some aqueous cream to try but doesn't seem to be helping.

My ds had this when he was a baby, hv said it was just dry skin and prescribes me Imulsifying oitment, it worked wonders, and can be bought over the counter, it is a very thick cream, and you can use it in the bath water instead of soap, makes things very slippery though, oh and your hands will be beautifully softSmile

ointment, even

The only thing that I could recommend is using Aveeno cream twice a day. It seems like the beginning of eczema but, if you keep the skin well hidrated it shouldn't develop further. If you take him to the GP they will recommend Aqueous cream, E45, Diprobase, etc but none of them is as good as Aveeno. So I would just shortcut to Aveeno straight away. (In DS's case the others didn't make a huge difference and, as many other eczema kids, after some time aqueous cream made the problem worse Sad)

Thanks for advice everyone. Is Aveeno available over the counter? I like aqueous cream (have it at work) but ime it only hydrates the skin - doesn't solve the problem. The emulsifying ointment sounds promising too. Bettyspaghetti - no it's not like goosebumps. What you are describing sounds like what I had as a child (as I reached puberty the goosebump things used to get whiteheads in them - gross)and they went away when I was about 18. They reappeared after I had ds but went again when I started using a body scrub. Have no idea what they are but creams don't help.

Aveeno lotion is available in Boots. Eczema is like colds, no matter how careful you are sooner or later are back. So, the idea is to find the way to keep eczema under control rather than making it disapear. It would go on its own when it's time.

Has your ds changed diet,expectin?

My ds had excema which improved so much when he gave up cow's milk.I must add that he gave up milk because he doesn't like it not because of the excema.Just a thought that it may be a reaction to a change in diet or a reaction to washing powder or pet/dustmite?

A j-cloth with oats tied in it and put in the bath is a great skin softener.

No diet change. Have a cat but she's been here since before he was born and no reaction before now. Use fairy non bio so no change there either. Baffled really.

Bought aveeno cream and emulsifying ointment. Used aveeno and it seems good (much less dry this morning and skin feels less bumpy)though smells horrid. I guess if it was perfumed it wouldn't be good for sensitive skin though.

I guess if it was perfumed it wouldn't be good for sensitive skin though. Also thought I might add that he has had a cold practically every week of his life (despite being breast fed for 7.5 months - pah!)and GP seemly proffered delayed immunity. I think there's more to it and it could be symptomatic of an allergy.
