Hello everyone.
I hope this find you and your dc well.
We're having a family party on Saturday for my DS' 3rd birthday. Dd has multiple food allergies so I need to make stuff that is totally safe for her so that she can enjoy it with everyone and so that I don't have to worry about any potential food related reactions.
I'll be making a cake, using a vegan recipe but with Doves farm wf/gf flour, and chocolate cornflake cakes using kinnerton nut safe choc. We have crisps, carrot stick for snacks, but I usually try and cook a something hot too. In the past couple of years I've done jacket potatoes, but did that last month for DD's birthday so am looking for other ideas. I have to cater for vegetarians and meat eaters and am looking for some easy, simple, idiot-proof recipes that are quick to prepare. There are usually about 16 of us but this year I think we've got 18.
I usually end up in the kitchen for the whole day so would love to just be organised so that it's mostly done before hand. The cake I make, doesn't usually get eaten as it has an aftertaste, but it means DS will have some candles to blow out.
DD is allergic to: Wheat, eggs, tree nuts, sesame, legumes (peanuts, soya, peas, chick peas, kidney beans, beans, lentils, mung beans, etc), ginger, kiwi, strawberry, rapeseed, guar gum and celery. She has Epipens as some of these are severe, which is why I avoid them in the house. DS and DD have the same diet.

I have been thinking about this since last month but haven't come up with anything :(.

I realise it's quite late with only 3 days to go, but if anyone has any suggestions then that would be really appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

For sweet stuff, have a look at www.theintolerantgourmet.com - she bakes without wheat, dairy, eggs, soya or yeast. You'll have to ignore all the recipes with almonds in, but her recipes really do work

Casa, thanks so much for that. I've been feeling like a bit if a loon for not coping very well with the whole allergy thing so to hear that you have had a good experience of CBT is really reassuring, so thank you for sharing that. Thanks. I didn't really seek help for a long while. I've been getting more and more anxious about things over he last 4.5 years and finally saw my gp about 18 months ago after DD's allergy nurse suggested that I should get help. So the gp put me onto citalopram which helped me to stop crying all the time but I'm still not quite right, if that makes sense. So fingers crossed the CBT can make a difference. I'd also like to come of the drugs but the gp think I need them still.
I don't thnk you've made the thread all about you, ow could you when all I do is talk about me me me Grin
Thanks again so much. And I'm sending you a big hug, for making me feel so much better about 'stuff' today. Take care, xxx.

Runningblue, hello. I've recently found out that Fiddies Payne mini marshmallows are wheat and gluten free, so the glucose syrup bit is safe for my DD. So your reply reminds me that I should try and make some Rice Krispie cakes. I made them a couple of years ago when Tesco own brand marshmallows and dairy toffee stated they were wheat free. Since then the labelling. Has changed so I never knew whether the glucose syrup would be wheat or maize based. Anyway, I didn't know your recipe with golden syrup, so will definitely try that, and then will also try the marshmallow version without th e toffee but will subst that with golden syrup. My mouth is watering just thinking about that gooey mess warming up in a pan. Yum!! Thank you :)

Dame, thanks for the reminder about the intolerant gourmet website. I always seem to forget to look at that one, so will do now. Thanks again for your help. :)

Ah good if you've found suitable marshmallows you might fancy Nigellas marshmallow rice krispie squares nigella's marshmallow squares
And - sorry net mums link - this is def the recipe my mum used to make -Kellogg's recipe - to make them special for birthday parties, she'd dip the end of each square in melted chocolate then leave to set on grease proof paper. Flipping heavenly!

casabevron · 17/10/2012 22:57

Smile Quick, have a hug back while no-one's looking!

Mmm, Rice Krispie squares. I think I may have to rustle some of those up tomorrow! The diet can wait til next week...

Runningblue · 17/10/2012 23:04

They're so healthy I swear crosses fingers

defineme · 17/10/2012 23:13

You hate cooking (no wonder -it's hardly going to be relaxing in your situation!) and you're feeding 18/don't want to be in kitchen?

I'm not sure you should go with hot. What's wrong with lovely cold roast chicken/ham, salads, rice salad, potato salad and so on?

Or I would borrow all my mates slow cookers and do chicken or beef stew:all veg in stew and rice/mash/new potatoes on stove.
Or roast pork/mash/veg

Could you stick dh under a gazebo well wrapped up and he could bbq lots of meat?

Sorry if that's no help-you have my sympathy.

mumat39 · 17/10/2012 23:39

Running blue, they must be healthy with all those added vitamins. You know, I've never even thought of dipping the ends in chocolate. Ooooh YUM!!!

I use a net mums recipe for the Krispie cakes too.

Casa, enjoy your health Krispie cakes. Grin

Defineme, it's really nice when everyone's here. I'm just dreading the food side of things. My dc love it too. Everyone sings happy birthday out of tune and I don't see DD or DS for hours as they're off playing with their cousins.

DP and cooking don't mix. Just after I had DD, DP cooked spaghetti. I came down after putting her to bed to find a gelatinous clump in the pan. DP had washed the dried spaghetti, because the day before I mentioned that e rice needed rinsing. Hmm Another time he cooked a keema from a recipe. I sat down o eat, had a mouthful and it was vile as he'd forgotten to add salt. He hasn't cooked since then. I sometimes wonder if that was a ploy.

Anyway, thanks for our suggestions. Would potato salad work with a yogurt dressing?

:)

Ooh yes or use crime fraiche for a creamier finish...

Runningblue · 18/10/2012 19:32

Creme!!

Mumat39 - just do the chilli without the kidney beans. I do. I'm allergic to kidney beans too. It's not the fact they're beans, but the tannins in them. Can't drink tea or red wine either. Sad
