Another thread reminded me that I kept meaning to post on this.

Lunches drives me crazy. DS is allergic toso many things all I give his are;

Ham or chicken sanwiches (he is allergic to Egg, cheese, seasame seeds and probably fish -currently awaiting test results)

Raisons (he won't eat any fruit)

Carrots

Orange juice.

Understandably he is really fed up of the monotony so if anone has any suggestions would love your advise.

how about jacket potatoes (with beans, chicken etc)

starlover · 18/03/2006 20:37

erm,... take him shopping to pick some unusual fruits and see if he'll try them and hopefully like them? mango, papaya, pineapple etc etc... get him to help you make a nice fruit salad

drosophila · 19/03/2006 19:28

I've tried the unusual fruits but he just refuses to eat them. Apparently kids with severe allergies see food as a threat and not something to be enjoyed and certainly are reluctant to try bew foods.

how old is your boy?
what does he eat for main meals?

is he underweight?

my son has many allergies, and yes food can be seen as a chore or something to avoid unless starving!!

does your son like pasta shells? ( with chopped up ham?)

is he ok with soya? can he have dairy free yogurts?

Is he allergic to nuts? can he eat peas etc?

Food wise for our lad, I keep things simple.
I make one main meal a day the all of us can eat, I always put veg on all the childrens plate and always offer fruit. ( like you have done)
Its offered and removed.

We involve all the children at some stage in cooking , prepareing veg etc and evening meals are at a table.
We try to give him some happy times(memories) while eating food to make up for the frightening occasions when things have gone very wrong.

my lad is now 10 yrs and when he was younger his intake of food was very low. its pretty high now , and he is hungry all the time.
even though he is still underweight.
That said , he eats all green veg, and meat .
we sort of stick to a 1950's diet , when he comes home from school a slice of wholemeal bread and jam is a good snack for him.
Meat and two veg for main meals. plain boring food seems to be the mainstay for all allergic people.

I think your sons boring lunch is quite good, keep offering new stuff, and hopefully as time goes by he will try it.

Thanks Williamsmummy. He will eat pasta untill the cows come home but he doesn't like meat except specific nuggets (M&S cos there is no egg in them.) He will sometimes eat a homemade pasta sauce and he will eat sweetcorn, raw carrot and brocoli but not in huge quantities.

He won't eat jam, jelly or icecream and rarely eats choc (have you ever know a child not to eat these things).

According to his consultant he is not underweight and the reason I get comments is cos there is so much obesity in this country. Still his ribs stick out and his arms look like twigs. His Dad is very slim so I shouldn't worry but you do. I just feel so sorry for him he hates sandwiches and he has so little choice.

On top of all this he doesn't like his food touching.

ah! the food not touching!, been there!, has grown out of that one.
I think that the veg stuff is good, and eating pasta sounds ok to me!

Wish us luck, next week william has a raw egg food challenge at St marys hos!

drosophila · 21/03/2006 16:25

Good luck with the challenge. Didn't know they did raw egg challenges. Hope he will eat the raw egg. I know I would be reluctant . We just did a peanut one and he did't react Grin but he hated the peanut butter and it was a struggle to get him to eat it.

I am new to this site, but I was interested in the lunch topic posted on Mar-18-06 from drosophila. I have two children and both of them have allergies. My 7 year old daughter is allergic to egg, wheat, and soy among other seasonal allergies, my 4 year old is allergic to all dairy products that are made from cows, ( casein included). Lunches are an ongoing battle for me as well. I would love to make fun lunches for school but it is very hard!

I found that trying things like lettuce wraps with their choice of toppings is a cool alternative to bread sandwhichs. and it gets them to eat dark lettuce( I use romaine or leaf lettuce.) We also do alot of smoothies, With tons of fruit choices it is an easy way to get picky kids to eat new things, I blend fruit with a little juice and possibly some ice cubes and voila all the daily requirements in one glass. ( I even through in a carrot from time to time and they never know the diff)

Yogurt mixed with granola ( homemade granola of course) is good too.

Hope something I have offered here is helpful to someone.
