we have gone for the single mmr jabs and have the mumps one left to do. But have been told we must go through a egg desentisising program (ds has egg allergy and the mumps jab has egg in it) anyone had a similar experience?

Has anyone had success/failure with this egg desensitisation program??

any other helpful advice in this area would be appriciated

thnx

I am soooooo glad that you mentioned this as ds has also had seperate jabs and has only got his mumps left to have. I had no idea is had egg in (ds also has an egg allergy). I have not heard of the desentising programme. I don't think that our allergist would be happy about it.

I thought they did albumin free versions of the mumps jab?

Heartmum2Jamie · 19/03/2006 20:07

Hmmm, I am going to call the clinic and ask them in the morning. That will give them a month to get the egg free jab in if they have to.

so does an egg free mumps jab actually exist!?

Jam3, I rang our clinic this morning to ask about the mumps jab and they will not allow ds to have it as it contains egg. They said that he would have been ok if he could tolerate biscuits, cakes etc (which Jaamie could), but was we following a strict avoidance diet, they will not allow it. No mention of egg desentising.

I was slightly concerned about leaving ds open to mumps, but she said that he could get the jab as late as 11 or 12 and be fine.

Have had a hospital appointment for allergic son today, and have been told that this method does NOT work for food.
For environmental allergies ,yes not food.

MMR is sometimes given in hospital for high risk egg allergic children. The risk is still very small. I suggest that this posibilty is investigated.
have to dash kids creeping out of bed and driving me nutS!!

i posted about the egg the other day after my ds had the MMR, he is egg intolerant not allergic. the vaccine is grown on cells from eggs

jellyjelly · 02/04/2006 22:09

We went down the spearate vaccine route and i believe (its beena while) that one of them does have egg in them but there is an alternative. It is tested or cultured/made from chick embroyo but there is a vaccien made from rat which can be suitable.

williamsmummy · 03/04/2006 10:42

if you are egg intolerant I dont think that the mmr is going to create any real risk of a reaction to egg.
The vaccine is cultured in egg, then removed, to go through another process, the amount of egg will be very , very small. This is of course of more risk to a severely classic allergic person than a food intolerant one.

That said , for the vast majority of those classic allergic people , like my son, who is allergic to egg, the vaccine was perfectly safe.

This question needs to be presented to a medical expert , rather than a GP HV .
