The 'school food trust' is working to provide changes to school vending machines from this sept.
There aims are to replace all unhealthy foods and drinks with healthy choices.
Fizzy drinks, chocolate bars and crisps will be replaced with milk, water, fruit , seeds and nuts.

The trust are asking for your opinons, if you have a child with food allergies , your views on this change will be valid.
We have until the end of march to make our views known, please go on to

www.dfes.gov.uk

Various charites , such as the anaphylaxis campaign and allergyUK are interested in your responses and opinons.

thank you

I just came across this by chance & had heard about the proposals & was hoping to help but was not too sure how i could. I will go to the website suggested. I have a child with a severe peanut allergy. He is only 7 and a half & his school is not very suportive anyway, so i have been concerned about this especially as i think his school would not think twice about this & go ahead with it. I hope all us parents of allergic children, sufferes themselves etc back this 100 percent, which im sure they will.Fingers crossed.

christywhisty · 17/03/2007 17:28

i see nothing wrong with it . My son is allergic to nuts and seeds, but these things are healthy to the majority of people and I see no reason to deny other people a healthy food.

Julia76 · 17/03/2007 18:09

Your child obviously is not anaphylactic then, otherwise you would be concerned with his/her safety!Christywhisty. Yes nuts are healthy but not to some, especially those with severe allergies to nut/peanuts.

christywhisty · 17/03/2007 18:30

he is anaphylatic, but i still don't agree with banning nuts in schools completely.I just don't believe and nor does he (he is 11) on imposing his allergies on the rest of the world.

Julia76 · 17/03/2007 19:45

I would love my son's school to ban nut/peanuts, but this probably will not happen, however, i feel that precausions should be put in place to reduce the risk of contact or cross contamination, not intentially putting peanut/nut allergy sufferers at more risk by introducing peanuts/nuts as healthy eating! I understand yours & your son's opinion to a certain extent, as he is that much older then my son, who is 7 years old. I also think it is wonderful that your son does not feel it necessary to impose his allergies to other's & i assume it easier when they get to his age, but i still do not agree with this proposal. But you and i are entitled to our own opions and i respect that. No hard feelings i hope! Julia

There is a difference between banning nuts completely and banning children from having them at school or actively discouraging them at school. I believe children should be taught consideration for others. Deliberately putting another child at risk is not considerate. They should be taught not to eat nuts in the presence of someone who may be harmed by it in the same way as they are taught not to hit other people.

Nuts were thrown at an allergic girl in my child's secondary school causing her face to swell up. Fortunately she's still around to tell me the story. I hope your christywhisty's son manages to avoid that type of bullying.

No child under 12 has been recorded as dying of peanut allergy in this country. That may be because deaths in young children are put down to asthma or it may be because we give less protection to secondary school children.

My ds school encourage healthy eating in school & have won awards, however they are not going to encoursge the tuck shop to sell nuts/peanuts or seeds , or encourage parents to send them in their lunch, as i mentioned the proposals regarding banning unhealthy foods & encouraging healthy one's to include nuts etc to them today at a meeting. So i hope that other schools will have the same attitude, at least my mind has been put at rest.
