Sulphites

This must have been done before, but I'm afraid I can't find it. Last year I developed an allergy to my beloved wine :( It gives me an excruciating stomach ache, followed by extreme vomiting (and, yes, this is after half a bottle!) I've assumed sulphites are the culprit. I do get tummy aches after eating other sulphite-containing foods such as sausages and crisps.

Thing is, everything I've found on the Web talks about asthma and migraines - neither of which I suffer from, thank goodness - not gut-related reactions like mine. I can't figure out whether sulphites are the problem or I should be looking at something less obvious.

I have a life-threatening allergy to sulphur-based drugs. So sulphur looks to be an obvious culprit - but sulphur comes in many different forms and I can eat eggs & onions, for example, in embarrassing quantities with no ill effects except stinky farts.

I'm hoping somebody might know where to find the precise information, or have researched it themselves? I can't afford allergy testing; have to experiment on myself.

Why don't you try sulphite-free wine and test it? Just do a search on the internet - there are loads of places in the UK that sell them.

Oh, thanks, Taxi, I didn't expect a reply Grin

I have found a few that are sulphite-free (or, more properly, contain only naturally-arising sulphites). They start at around £12 plus postage, so I may have to put this experiment off for a while. Interestingly, organic wines still have sulphites added. My rich brother took me out for dinner with very expensive red wine, which is supposed to be less chemical. Reaction was less severe, but still painful.

YY, will try one of the specialist wines!
