Anyone experienced allergy to mushy peas?!

DTD 13 mths had a reaction to mushy peas a few days ago. Red face and neck, hives, puffy swollen eyes, very itchy. I had piriton to hand so she was ok, but I'm wondering whether it was the actual peas that caused the reaction, or the colouring in them - the only ingredients on the tin were peas, water, sugar, and colourings, tartrazine and brilliant blue.

A quick google suggests that the brilliant blue can occasionally cause an allergic reaction.

Any experience? She's also allergic to dairy and eggs that we know of.

I thought peas were part of peanut family? May be worth checking this out.

Thank you - I'll look into that. She's fine with normal frozen peas.

It could be cross contamination if the mushy peas are made from dried or split peas. DS is fine with frozen and fresh peas, but reacts to split and dried peas which we think is due to cross contaminations from lentils or chickpeas at the factory.

and of course, legumes are related to peanuts. certainly the colourings can cause problems for some, although thats more rare.

you may be discovering new allergies as you already have a multiple allergic child.

testing for other legumes and peanuts may be the way forward here.

Thanks eragon. I think I need to try and get an appt with her allergy paed and take it from there. Peanut and other legume testing certainly seems to be the way forward Smile

I was going to ask if they were proper ones or tinned

When I was younger I had to avoid tartrazine as it made me wheeze. Proper mushy peas are really just dried peas & bicarbonate of soda

Could be the peas, or could be some chemical included with them. I had a friend who had a massive reaction after eating a strawberry, the reaction wasn't to the strawberry but to the pesticides used... wasn't in the uk, was somewhere in europe

eragon · 31/08/2012 10:35

most strawberry reactions are caused by the high histamine content in very ripe ones. would cause a problem for those with an over full 'allergy cup'.

peas are a legume and the protien in inside the bean/pea in larger amounts, 5% of people allergic to peanut are allergic to some types of beans.
however, not all beans in that food family are a problem. my son could eat whole green beans, monge tout, but not kidney beans, chick peas, etc
(luckily now outgrown, but still wont eat them, but thats another story!)

todays food colouring most often are formed from natural products so can cause problems for those with allergies. however it depends on the protein stucture that remains after processing.

babybarrister - your DS who is allergic to mushy peas - is he allergic to peanuts too? Anything else he can't have? My DTD is only 13 months so I'm conscious that there's lots of things out there she hasn't tried yet, so we may yet have allergies to discover.

Thanks to everyone for the info provided Smile

My DH is severely nut and peanut allergic. He never eats mushy peas or butter beans as they make his mouth itch (but not full blow reaction). He's ok with all other types of pea or bean

Izzybuzzybuzzybees · 02/09/2012 08:54

My DH is allergic to beans and lentils. He used to eat peas ok but one day had a reaction to mushy peas and so now avoids these too. He used to eat pakora ok as well but one night had a bad reaction which we now know must have been the gram flour made from lentils. It's strange as he ate peas for years til the mushy pea incident.

We have an almost 2.9 yr old DD and we have never tried her with beans, peas or lentils in case of a reaction, I wonder when we could try?

Jojay · 02/09/2012 21:53

Thanks everyone. I know she's ok with soya, frozen peas, baked beans, green beans, and I think, butter beans (I'm sure I've given her those before in a sausage casserole...)

There's a few she hasn't had yet though, lentils, chickpeas, or any sort of nut or peanut ( or has she had peanut butter? Can't remember..... Confused ), so further testing is probably the way forward.

Thanks all.
