is this an allergic reaction ... to fry ups?

twice now ds1 (10 months) has had a reaction after we've been out for a fry up on a Saturday morning. Once he was having bits of my toast sausage egg (fried) and chips and the other time bits of ds1's sausage egg, toast, mushrooms & bacon. All of these foods he has had at other times without a reaction.

Each time he refused all the food after holding it in his hand. Everywhere where he had put his hands (on his lips, cheek and where he'd rubbed his eyes) came out in what looked like nettle stings and it puffed up. Both times it went within half an hour. And both times he was then sick an hour or so later.

Any ideas?

Is he reacting to the oil it's fried in? Do they use nut oil or something? Ask and check.
If he has exactly the same food at home does he react the same way?

Personally I'd find a different place to eat, or make a cooked breakfast yourself at home, but it's worth finding out what caused it so you can avoid it in future.

It does sound exactly like an allergic reaction.

Could you ask them what they use to cook / fry the food?

Could they be using a nut oil (peanut?) or somthing?

No idea if that would be likely but obviously it is something that they are using which you don;t use at home.

I'd wondered about the oil - it was 2 different places but I could ask both. The only difference with stuff we have at home is that we have cheap Walls sausages but these ones were herby. He's never had a reaction like this (or at all) apart from these 2 times)

Is he definately not allergic to egg?

quite common at his age

fisil · 12/03/2006 12:04

he's had egg at home with no reaction

well sounds like it's either something cross contaminating the oil or something in the sausages then .

I agree it's worth finding out as the reation could get worse.

Most nut oils used are ok for a nut allergy as they are so processed that there is no nut protien left.Ds has a nut allergy and can have ground nut oil.

Some restaurants may use cheaper unrefined nut oil that may cause a reaction. We don't eat inchinese or indian restaurants with ds because of this.

Have just spoken to yesterday's restaurant. Eggs fried in "vegetable oil". Sausages were pork and were grilled, not fried.

I think it may have been cross contamination - in which case we're still in the dark about what it is.

Does that mean we just have to be careful and observant, or are there any medications we should get in just in case?

It's probably worthwhile having some antihistamine like piriton or cetirizine(zirtek) in the house.

ds was tested for allergies at 18 months( had been on waiting list for 6 mos) so it may be an idea to ask your gp about testing.

thanks. Will do
