Has anyone tried to desensitize their child from a food their mildly allergic from?

My babys food allergy list is so extensive now, theres very few things he can eat. He develops a new allergy each week (to thing he was previously ok with), its getting so long, drawn out and serious, if it contines he'll be allergic to all food within a month or two. This is no exageration, we're waiting for an urgent referral to Guys in London.

Basically, hes anaphylactic to several foods but the rest are moderate.

I read a lot about succesfully desensitizing a person to foods by giving them tiny amounts. Im waiting for a call back from DS's current consultant and this is one things I wanted to ask.

I just wondered if anyone had done anything similar.

Really not recommended without medical supervision. Today's mild-moderate reaction can become tomorrow's full-blown anaphylaxis. Desensitization programmes do exist but they are done under strict medical supervision and not something to be tried at home. Hopefully your DS's appointment will come through soon and you'll get some much needed help and advice. Good luck.

This should definitely NOT be tried at home. Well meaning friends and relatives may suggest giving 'little bits to build tolerance' (my dad still says this!!), but they are very, very wrong!

You are still breastfeeding, yes? Don't worry too much about a balanced diet in the very short term - you are already providing that with breastmilk. Babies under about 18 months old can still get a huge proportion of their nutrients from breastmilk. Hopefully you will get some proper support from the hospital very soon now.

How old is ds? Mine was allergic to lots as a baby and lived on home-made veg that I pureed, that's it. He couldn't have anything else. He had 1 episode where his whole head swelled up to more than twice its size, his lips were so puffy and stretched I was sure they would just tear right open! We think a carpet fibre caused this!! I kept getting told he may grow out of these allergies Hmm He spend every single day covered in purple and red blotches. At 10 months old he woke up one day and was a normal white/pink colour, no blotches anywhere Shock That was it! No more allergies! I'm still shocked to this day as to how it happened!

He's reacted mildly twice since then. I would also NOT recommend de-sensitising without professional supervision.

He is 15 months and they're showing no signs of stopping. He has hives on hos body 24 hours a day. Its relentless.

My ds didn't show any signs of stopping either. He went to bed covered in hives as usual, as he had been for 10 full months. He woke up the next morning with 'normal' skin, everything literally disappeared overnight! Bizarre does not even come close. I would never have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. I pray the same happens for you ...
