Coeliac & diahorea experiences please!

Had CD for a while but never had the typical diahorea that can go with it. However recently I've had a few episodes of stomach cramps (familiar) & pretty full on diahorea (new) but feel fine otherwise.

So I'm now wondering how you tell the difference between a bug & getting glutened?

I can't identify where any possible gluten could be getting in from but I'm either missing something or barking up the wrong tree...

If the diarrhoea different in any way? How long can it go on for? Does it smell/look different etc?

Pretty grim topic but would really appreciate any input!!

My sons diahorrea starts about 2 hours after whatever hes eaten and it has its own unique sickly aroma, is also paler than "normal" poo .... Can take us a couple of days to get him back under control (even with 3 adult immodium a day). He has NO bowel control at all in this period - I could have shares in baby wipes and knickers !

HTH

Also he is really sensitive and I now avoid anything with maltodextrin in (or Dextrose unless it says source of this)

Thanks for this. Your poor DS. I always feel for the LO's, it must be really tough on them. It's such a bum this disease (pardon the pun).

I'm on day three now of a dodgy tum. I had a similar episode last week but only for an evening which made me think gluten.
I'll have to have go through everything & try to identify the cause. I guess there are lots of potentials that have been 'safe' before. I'm rapidly running put of things to eat.

I loath being a coeliac Sad

Hi I to am coeliac and when I have an episode the diarhoea is generally very smelly, pale and sort of frothy!! But not always suppose depends what you've eaten. I was always ok with GF oats but recently I have been having a lot of coeliac episodes and it took a while for us to identify the GF oats as the culprit apparently even tho they were GF the protein in oats called avenin is very similar in structure to gluten so the body gets confused. If you are eating anything with GF oats in this may be the culprit??? My consultant prescribed codeine for the diarhoea as well as fibogel as apparently it can help absorb the liquid in the bowel and return the movements lol to normal! He also said diaoralyte RELIEF is good as it adds bulk to the bowel!!

That's really helpful, thanks. It's been pretty offensive & a bit foamy at times. Seems to have lessened this afternoon.

I have had oats recently, I've been having muesli for breakfast. Its GF & I'm usually ok with oats but i guess it could have changed. I've been a bit daring recent & eaten out more & ended up getting glutened. May be I need to heal a bit & then give them another go...

I'll cut them out & hope it resolves. Thanks again.

No problem its easy to slip into bad habits I know especially when your stomach feels normal and the effects aren't immediate or obvious!. it may be because your bowel is a bit aggravated after having a few gluten slip ups so it's hypersensitive and reacting to the oats. If you stay of gluten and oats for a while so it settles again you'll probably find reintroducing oats in a few months will be ok.

Glad the diarhoea has settled a bit now!

When my DS was diag. the dietician told me to avoid all oats for a year and then I could reintroduce them but no more than 25g at a time and no more than twice a week. TBH I have bought the GF oats but haven't dared try them :-(

Suckeddry · 19/08/2012 17:42

I think I have slipped a bit. Like you say it's easily done when you feel ok. I dont feel ok now though, so in a way it's better to know damage is being done (trying desperately to find a bright side here!).

I didn't introduce oats for a year either but have been fine with them once I did & could eat them regularly. They're just causing problems as I've been glutened when eating out. Stupid restaurants never get it right!
