Allergic laryngitis?

How do you know if it's allergic laryngitis? I had a fluey bug about a week ago, so it would make sense that I have laryngitis now as a continuation of that. However, over the last three weeks, we have been looking after a neighbour's dog and this weekend have a second dog to look after too. I have now lost my voice completely and my throat is very sore. I have tested as allergic to dogs, but assumed it was mild, as I have never noticed any major symptoms when I'm with dogs (it's a different story with cats and I would never dare to have a cat stay in my house). Incidentally, the recent dog is very needy, so I have been sleeping on the sofa with it at night, ie. am very exposed to any allergens.

It's important that I find out as we are considering getting a dog and I will not be getting one if it does this to me!

Anyone else ever had laryngitis caused (or worsened) by an allergy?

That sounds like my reaction to our cats :( which I only discovered or linked to them a couple of years after we got them... We had to find them a new home which was really heartbreaking. I now find that the reaction is much more quick and clear when I suddenly have exposure to cats which proves that's what caused my frequent loss of voice when we had them.

Probably not what you wanted to hear... but better do as much research as pos before getting a dog to avoid pain later on :-/

I'd chat to your GP about it, see what they reckon.

Thanks, Maz. I'm sorry you had to rehome your cats, but it's the only reasonable thing you could do in the circumstances. It must have been awful to put up with these symptoms for a couple of years. I'm going to visit the dr on Monday, if I can get an appointment. And I'm not risking sleeping on the sofa with the Jack Russell tonight.

As you say, it's best to find out now rather than after we've bought a dog.
