Is it possible to be intolerant to banana?

I'm wondering if it is possible that my dd (2.5) might be intolerant to banana. She never liked it when she was being weaned and used to reject it at nursery. Recently, as she has started to copy her peers, she has begun to request a banana, however, she has only ever eaten a whole banana with me twice, once a month ago and again this morning both times she has been sick about 2 hours later.

I rang the nursery to say she wouldn't be coming in and asked if she ate banana at nursery, they said she did. She also drinks smoothies with banana in without any ill effects.
So now I'm not sure whether it might be the quantity of banana that she consumes or a coincidence that she has been sick after eating banana. Any ideas? She is already intolerant to wheat, dairy and soya although we are currently trying to introduce baked dairy products.

One of my sons has trouble digesting banana. So from a young age, asked me not to give him any.He is not a fussy eater so I respected his wishes. And he is still the same about bananas now.He was also by this time diagnosed as nut allergic,so I was careful to heed what he said.

I hate banana, I'm not allergic to it.
However, I've never managed eat enough to know if it makes me ill.

My DM says I spat it out from my first taste as a tiny baby.

Banana does not sit well with my dad
I guess these days you would say he was intolerant

DS2 couldn't tolerate banana as a baby (gave him bad tummy ache), but is fine now, aged 5.

He has a friend who can't tolerate it, and I know an adult who is allergic.

Yes - and they will typically also react to latex, so it is important to find out for sure.

Dramajustfollowsme · 10/08/2012 21:55

I have an intollereance to banana. I was told its natural sugars are quite close in make up to Lactose (in dairy). I have an intollereance to that too.
Similarly, my sis has an allergy to pineapple and kiwi and this is linked to her latex allergy.
Trying to plan our family meals can be tricky at times!

confuddledDOTcom · 10/08/2012 22:12

I was just thinking it's a latex allergy, glad someone else said that.

There is a lady I work with who ran from the room during a meeting because someone opened a banana and she hadn't noticed. Her husband noticed the banana and said that would be why, so now bananas are banned from meetings that she's involved in.

I have an intolerance to banana. I get very sick, and sometimes a spotty chest.

Can't even tolerate the smell without feeing physically sick.

My ds is intolerant to banana. Gives him green frothy poos. Yuck!

My friends toddler gets sick on banana so I guess yourr DD is too.

Im told children often 'naturally' reject foods they dont get on with.

Banana made me feel sick, constipated and lethargic throughout childhood, and I always avoided eating it.

DS is allergic to banana (ige allergy confirmed by hospital tests).

My ds always had toilet problems and had never (sorry tmi) done a proper formed poo. It was getting so bad that he was having diarhoea every day, several times a day sometimes, even his teacher spoke to us about his frequent and prolongued visits to the loo. We took him to the docs who then referred him to a specialist, she didn't think it was a disease of any kind but agreed there was a problem, so she referred us to a dietician and asked us to keep a food diary. He used to have for breakfast every morning, a bowl of cereal, banana and pineapple juice, sometimes also having a banana at school during snack time, as soon as we made the connection, we stopped bananas completely from his diet, and hey presto, for the first time in his life, normal poo's! Then about 4 weeks after our breakthrough the dietician appointment came through, which we cancelled. It's such a shame though, because he loves bananas. A few weeks after he ate a banana at school, although we had told his teachers not to let him have any, but as soon as he was home he was glued to the loo and I knew he'd eaten one. So in answer to your op, then, yes.

ByTheWay1 · 11/08/2012 21:01

Yep - and it can come on in later life too - I used to love bananas, now I cannot eat them without getting stomach cramps and a general feeling of bloating.

trixymalixy · 12/08/2012 11:06

Bananas used to make DD sick when she was little. She grew out of it thankfully.

mrsXsweet · 13/08/2012 23:06

Thank u, we are def going to avoid banana for the time being. I hate it myself and banana puke is repulsive!

My DS is allergic to banana and so is my DH, but they are also both allergic to zinc cream etc which bananas are high in. DS is worse than DH and will come out in blisters if he even touches the skin of one

Debbie10 · 24/08/2012 23:26

Yes u can be allergic to
Bananas it's also linked with latex allergy. I would ask gp to refer you tto an allergy specialist as they can test for this and other possible allergies
