Reaction to hummus

Hello,

DS2 who is 2.3 yo is allergic to dairy and also mildly to egg. The other day he licked some hummus (which he has eaten before) and everywhere the hummus touched on his face, eyes and hands came up in hives ( which is his usual reaction to dairy). Any ideas what he is reacting to? Could it be sesame and if so could this indicate nut issues? (don't think he has ever tried nuts....)

Sorry for long post! Any help gratefully received.

It could be sesame although it's a bit odd if he's eaten hummus lots of time before. Is it a different brand? I would have thought all hummus would have sesame in. It might be something about the way this particular brand is made (e.g. particular ingredient or manufacturing line also makes things with dairy / nuts etc and hasn't been cleaned thoroughly.) Sorry. Not sure that's much help. My dd is allergic to peanuts but is fine with sesame, so there is not always a link.

could possibly indicate a problem with legumes, as its made with chick peas. legumes are in the same family as peanut. 5% of peanut allergic are also allergic to these bean type legumes.

so, it might be worth considering further testing after this reaction.
just because he has eaten it before doesnt mean that a new allergen hasnt developed. keep the outer packaging , in case its another ingredeint that might be causing a problem, such as sesame.

DS is allergic to both sesame and chickpeas. He ate humous several times with no problems before he reacted to it.

He tested negative to peanut allergy up until his last allergy testing in December just before he was 5, but tested positive last time, and also positive to other nuts. Sorry, prob not what you wanted to hear Sad

Just to add to trixy's reply, DD is also allergic to sesame, legumes incl peanuts, other nuts plus a few other things.

She was okay with chickpea the first time she ate it and then the next day, reacted to the same batch of a chikpea curry that I'd made. :( She has also reacted to lentils, mung beans, etc.

She hasn't ever eaten peanuts, or nuts or sesame, but reacted to those during testing.

Good Luck and hope you find the culprit soon.

Thanks for all your replies.

I just feel so frustrated cos when he was diagnosed with milk allergy at about 6 months I really hoped he'd grow out of it, but instead it seems to be getting worse and he keeps reacting to more things.

E.g. He ate some very ripe strawberries the other day and had a big skin reaction and puked even though he has had strawberries before. But I read that over ripe ones have high levels of histamine in so can cause reactions. Thing is does this mean he can eat not too ripe ones? So many questions get thrown up by each new reaction!

Back to the allergy docs in December so I guess I'll just a whole new list of foods to test him for. Sigh.

Sorry for rant!

we now avoid strawberries for this reason. its a pain I know, seems ok with some other fruit, but cant have oranges as too acidic and cause pain in tummy when eaten.
cant eat kiwi as defo seriously allergic.
but can eat banannas , grapes, blueberries etc no problems.

everything is trial and error with allergies.
