Don't put any mineral or animal based products on your child's skin for eczema - this includes Oilatum (contains parrafin and lanolin) and baby oil and aqueous cream (contains parrafin) and vaseline and lanolin (can contain residues of sheep dip - nice NOT!). Only use vegetable based products which can actually sink into the skin and improve its condition. The mineral and animal products just sit on the skin and coat it. They act as barriers. Eczema is actually the result of too much water being in the skin and particular cells (the mast cells which make histamine) get waterlogged. Chickweed cream is good and in a real emergency SOS Cream from Barefoot Botanicals (expensive but amazing). If you can afford it, find a qualified Clinical Aromatherapist who will custom-blend a formula containing natural anti-inflammatory, diuretic and healing essential oils (German chamomile, helichrysum, yarrow, lavender) in a soothing base cream (with some Calendula and Evening Primrose Oil). Much better than hydrocortisone and actually improves the condition of the skin rather than just providing a temporary fix. You can find a Clinical Aromatherapist by calling IFPA on 01455 637 987.
