Trial of hypoallergenic formula for reflux and diarrhoea

Hi
My LO is 7 weeks and has awful reflux symptoms and explosive diarrhoea.
We have infant gaviscon and the GP suggested a 2 week trial of hypoallergenic formula to rule out cows milk protein intolerance.
He didn't prescribe as he said he isn't up on milk and told me to see HV. Which milk should I be asking for and should it be on prescription?
I've read about pepti from Aptamil/ C&G?

Thank you

We used Enfamil AF with DD and it worked brilliantly but that was 6 years ago and there might be better stuff out now.

Pepti is the better tasting one, then there's neutramigen which is foul. They are formulas that are broken down.

Neutramigen AÀ and neocate are amino acid based.

DS refused neocate, so we tried pepti and he's been fine on it (I think he used to still react a bit to it but the meds dealt with that and at least he was enjoying his milk, he's fine now).

In my experience the health visitors have no idea! When they've asked what formula he's on and I tell them they ask what it is!! I had one tell me not to pursue getting him onto a different milk as I'd be weaning him soon and it'd be a pain!!!

I agree with Janey - HV are clueless and I can't believe your GP won't help! DD wouldn't touch nutramigen or neocate (Tastes like fish food mixed with marmite) but is thriving on Aptamil Pepti which tastes just like normal formula. It is whey based though so still contains cows milk just a very hydrogenised version so the protein is broken down.

Id ask for a referral to paediatrics and a paediatric dietician. Hv are rubbish at this sort of thing, as are gps!

hope you get some improvment

Even if you get a referral push for the milk because it's a long wait! If they keep refusing go to a paed urgent centre or a&e, they might think you're a bit mad for being there but who cares!

GPs were so reluctant to prescribe for us until I took DS to the ambulatory unit (urgent care), the gp sent us but the paed still treated me like some crazy mother. Surgery still werent too happy because it's so expensive but weirdly enough when he refused neocate they were very happy for us to try the cheaper pepti!

Like PP said (sorry on phone so can't look back) pepti tastes nearly like normal formula, and apparently pepti 2 is even better. DS turned into a milk monster when we switched from 1 to 2 and now he can't even see the bottle before its ready or he goes mad until he's drinking it!! Blush

Come late to this thread and you are probably sorted, but can I recommend the Little Refluxers support board - all that kept me sane (ish).
