Hi

DD is 15 weeks and is on Cow & Gate Infasoy due to lactose intolerance. She has been very badly constipated ever since we started her on it. Her motions are very hard and dry and make her bottom bleed.

Just wondering if anyone's ds/dd has had problems with constipation on Cow & gate Infasoy.

DS really had a bad time with constipation, eczema etc while on Cow and Gate but he was not using Infasoy so, I guess, not much help here. I don't remeber quite well if he should be also drinking water in addition to the formula, at this age but that may be a cause (not enough extra water)

About soya... has the doctor recommended any other option?

DS2 is lactose intolerent with constipation as main syptom, he is also soy intolerent which is quite common, your DD is quite young for soy anyway don't think it is recomended for under 6 months. I would see Dr get a prescription milk, my DS has nutramagen

Thanks Geogteach & Chandra

Yes, paed suggested I stick to soya. My ds had bad gas and constipation until I switched him to soya at 13mnths, so paed is satisfied that dd might have a lactose/cow's milk intolerance too. This is the 2nd time we have try her on soya (went back to cow's milk for a week so that her GP could test for lactose intolerance, but he tested her for UTIs instead Angry) She definitely seems to have less gas, bloating and tummy ache on soya despite being constipated.

I asked about soya for under 6mnths and he said it was not a problem. Also, he suggested weaning at 18wks which he thinks will help the constipation and her silent reflux.

Paed didn't mention any other milk but I will try SMA Wysoy and see what happens.

DS was fine on Infasoy but would start getting constipated with Wysoy, that is why we went straight for Infasoy.

She refuses to drink water, can only get 1oz in her per day. Paed thinks it is more to do with the formula and doesn't think increasing her water intake will solve the problem.

Geogteach - What type of formula is nutramagen?

Take care

my dd started on soya milk at about 10 wks old after vomiting and very loose stools, she is now much happier but does also now have constipation. she will drink water but have gone through lots of different cups to see what she likes. things are now a lot better as she eats lots of veg and fruit. i did not want to put juice in her cup as my mil said i should i dont want her to have a sweet tooth. dd is on wysoy.
good luck

Nutramegen is prescription only, it is dairy based but with lactose removed I think, supposed to be good for those with allergies, tastes foul so you need to introduce it young although DS started at 9 months and still drinks it now at 17 months.

I just mentioned about soya because most paediatricians now feel a bit reluctant to prescribe it to baby boys (some problem with oestrogen levels or something of the sort, there was a study two years ago whose results were widely publicised)

Soya is also a very common allergen. DS is very allergic to soya now, the only exposures he had to soya before developing the allergy were soya formula and a bath oil prescribed to help his eczema. Although we can not know for sure when, what or how things turned out this way...

Just a quick up date. After going backwards and forwards between gps, hvs and paeds they all seem to be on the same page and have informed me that along with other issues re soya formula it seems that the latest EU guidelines are that soya formulas are not nutritional enough for infants under 6mnths, despite tins saying from birth, and it should only be use as a last resort. As a result we have been prescribed Nutramigen which dd has reacted to in the same way she does with other cow's milk based forumlas we are in the process of sorting out a prescription for Neocate which will hopefully do the trick otherwise it it back to soya under the supervision of a dietician.

Thanks
