Allergic reaction to insect bites?

Does anyone have any experience of a child reacting to insect bites?

My DS (6) got badly bitten overnight on Monday - windows were open as we had been away all weekend and it was sweltering. At about 1am he called out for me as he said there were bees in his room. I went in and couldn't see any mozzies so settled him back down again. Half an hour later, he was crying again and this time I found 6 mozzies and swatted them. Ten minutes later he was copiously sick.

Next day, he had about 2 dozen bites, some of them massive. The one on his hip covers the whole hip joint. They were really bothering him.

I assumed the vomiting was a tummy bug, but the next day he was fine and wanted to eat and drink. It was only yesterday that I suddenly thought they could have been related to the bites, especially given that the skin reactions to the bites are quite extreme.

When I looked on the NHS website, it said vomiting after insect bites is a systemic reaction and you should call 999. Shock. I didn't because at the time I didn't realise the vomiting was connected to bites.

I have called the GP to try and get some advice but there are no appointments and I am waiting for a call back.

DS is fine - have been giving him piriton and putting cream on the bites and they aren't getting infected or anything. But I am worried about what might happen in future if he gets bitten again - which he will obviously...

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Hi [again!]
You do need an appointment. Try nurse practitioner if you can't get GP. They can prescribe and will refer up to GP if necessary.
Not had experience of bites but very recently ds experienced extreme urticaria reaction to who knows what. We too are soon on holiday so is a concern.
Ds needed soluble steroid tablets as well as piriton to damp down reaction.

thanks. we don't have nurse practitioners unfortunately. still waiting for the call... will phone again for an emergency one tomorrow if i hear nothing today.

i am sure these are mozzie bites rather than anything else. i did splat the offending buggers, but not until they had chewed him all over. poor lad. :(

Bumping you up as know there are some wise allergy experts on this site [not me though.. and hoping won't ever have to be...].
