Allerief

My 8 month old DD has just been prescribed Allerief antihistamine for suspected hayfever. She coughs a lot during bottle feeding which is resulting in her not drinking her entire bottle for the past few weeks and has a runny nose. The leaflet for Allerief says not recommended for children under 1 year but the doctor said it is ok. I now do not know what to do, have I been fobbed off by my doctor saying it is hayfever? It is in our family and she does have other allergies (dairy and gluten so far) and is absolutely fine in herself so maybe they are right. And has anyone else ever given allerief to a child under 1 year of age?
Thanks in advance for advice!

Yes, I gave Allerief to my DD although it was a one-off. She was 7 months old. Have you seen any improvement with it? I am assuming that if the leaflet says "fine for a one year old" it's quite mild as most medicines I've seen say 2 years old and over?

I'd give it I had to do the same for my dd when she had allergy at 6 mth old and apart from chickenpox at the moment she's fine. She takes it for hayfever and allergys on a regular basis and has done for the last 4.5 yrs

Thanks, I will give it a go today, I had just never heard of a cough as a result of hayfever!

Sounds like you have Very little confidence in your gp. Why not have a chat to a pharmacist to set your mind at rest about any risks.

I lost all confidence in my GP when they prescribed me antibiotics to take for post birth probs when my DD was breast feeding at a few weeks old & she ended up having an adverse reaction to them despite them assuring me they wouldn't affect her. When she was rushed in again & the big red book was finally consulted it said this drug "severely affects breast feeding". So to be honest I don't trust a thing they say now. This time I went in saying she has a hacking cough during bottle feeding & they didn't even look in her throat, just took her temp, suggested I try an inhaler (!!!!!!) and prescribed antihistamine. Makes me so cross but due to our local post code lottery I am stuck with this surgery. Thanks for the tip on the pharmacist though, I will ask them today.

Are you able to change what GP you see if you are unhappy with this one? Is there another one at the same practice?
