Hi PLease help!

My five mth old son has a dairy allergy so is on special milk and no dairy products but is covered in Excema, he itches like mad and everything we seem to do makes it worse. We have tried Diprobase and Aqueaus creams but they just seem to make him flare up even more. He has Olaitum in his bath but now Im questioning is that making it itch too? We also bought a heral cream - Hope off of the net but nothing seems to work and he is just so sore. We have also done all the obvoius like special washing powder and cotton clothing.

Please help my husband and I just dont know what to do

poor you. ditch the aquous cream for a while. go back to the GP and ask for something else and a referral to the dermotologist. i found that dermol 500 lotion and balneum bath additive works well for my dd1.

oops, misdee, not mieow

Its horrible watching your little baby suffer isn't it. I would continue to try different creams until you find the one which suits your baby. I have never found any of the ones you mention any good for me either. Personally i find Aveeno is the best which a GP can prescribe or its sold in Boots. But there are zillions of creams out there, it really is a case of trial and error until you find the right one.

Of course, creams do not cure excema, it is simply about getting 'control' over it. As misdee says, get a referral to a dermatologist for more recommendations and advice on how to cope with it.

The best advice i was given was to keep the skin as greasy as possible, this way, when you do have a scratch, the nails don't break the skin and make the whole thing worse. For me, i apply cream every single time i feel like i want to scratch, which could mean many many times a day.
I would recommend covering your baby in cream at least 6times a day if not more.

Hope things calm down for your poor ds!

Diprobase & Aqueous creams also seemed to make my DS worse. We are now using Aveeno which is much better & they do a bath oil too.

You might need an anti-histamine to break the itch/scratch cycle. Ds had one, and it allowed the sore skin to recover.

if your child is covered in eczema as mine was i would reccomend that you take him straight to Dr Athertron at Great Ormond street private consulting rooms. It is expensive but well worth it. My son responded to no creams but since seeing Dr Atherton is now at 1yr nearly clear and he was originally in the worst 5%.

how much is a private consultaion with dr altherton and how many do you need. my dd has very itchy excema and since having a virus it now covers entie body and we are using betovate antifungal/HC to control it.

i want to do the best i can for her its heartbreaking

HOLLY5 · 28/03/2006 10:18

it is about £200 but you probablly only need to go once. It really is worth it.

forevermore · 28/03/2006 10:20

should i let steriods etc wear off and make it at its worst before i go? or will pics suffice. also i have a referal to local hospital do i have to get letter from GP?

Nemo1977 · 28/03/2006 10:31

dont know if it will help you but my 3mth old DD had bad excema on her face. I tried everything gp prescribed but it didnt help. Then at a baby fair someone was selling a natural cream called soothe-it. I swear within 24hrs of using it her excema was a lot better and wasnt ittiching. Now 2 wks later her excema has completely gone. It is by a company called alva natural and you can buy online if you are interested I will find a link. The cream was £10 a pot

double check the ingrediant label on the various ezcema products. There may be a milk /fruit/ oil diviative in them.
What is your daily routine of ezcema treatment?

HOLLY5 · 28/03/2006 17:09

i think pictures will be enough and sometimes it does take a while to get an appointment. I think you need a referel letter but they are not too worried about this and you can book the appointment first and as you are paying there is nothing for your GP to moan about.

In the meantime i would say only put a 50:50 mix of liquid and white soft parifin on as a moisturiser - this is the only cream my son does not react to and carry on using your steriod.
Really cover him at night in the 50:50.
