Has anyone elses child had a tomato allergy? My 4 year old son always got a raised sore looking red rash when he ate anything with tomato in it. It never seemed to bother him but over the last few months he is now refusing to eat anything with tomato in it. Saying that it burns his mouth and hurts his throat. He also still gets the same rash as always. Could this be a true tomato allergy as I know they are rare it seems to of gotten worse everytime he eats them. Any advice would be great xxxx

I would get it checked out. Ask for a skin prick test. Sore mouths / throats are not good. I would definitely avoid tomato until you've got this investigated.

My dd2 had a suspected tomato allergy. She got alarming looking hives after eating a bowl of cherry tomatoes. She subsequently had a skin prick test, which came out clear. Even so, we were advised to avoid raw tomatoes for about a year (she was about 20 months), then gradually reintroduce them (e.g. first an eighth of a cherry tomato, avoiding the juice, then a quarter of a cherry tomato etc). If she had any kind of reaction we were advised to stop and wait another 6 months or so. Incidentally, cooked tomato was always OK for my dd and I think this is quite common as the cooking process does something to the proteins.

Would they do the prick test at the doctors or would we have to go up to the hospital for it? Xx

My friend's dd is allergic to tomato and strawberries and things like that.

My son, now grown up was allergic to Tomatoes, Avacado and various other fruits. Again it manifested itself in sore and itchy mouth and lips. He told me recently he has grown out of it mostly and can now eat raw tomtatoes.

He was never tested but a chef told us there is some kind of enzyme that is in both those fruits that causes allergy.

Oh yes, add strawberries!

We were referred to an allergy clinic at Addenbrookes to get the suspected tomato allergy investigated via a skin prick test. I guess it might depend where you live as to who investigates. Incidentally, although my's first odd reaction was to tomatoes and she "passed" the skin prick test, she subsequently had reactions to peanuts (severely allergic), pineapple, melon and chocolate (although I think this was because of "traces of nuts"). It is possible that your ds may also react to other things in the future.

I have eaten a wide variety of fresh fruits and veg my whole life. At the age of 41 I have developed a severe allergy to raw tomatoes, most likely due to overexposure. Symptoms include:swollen lips, swollen tongue, puffed up eyes, nose closes, throat itches, all within 2-3 minutes of eating it. It looks awful, think dermabrasion, bad botox and bad fillers. It takes a week and seven days of steroids to get the reactions to go down. I am also now intolerant other fruit, strawbs, plums, apricots, kiwis, and fruit juice. The symptoms are cramp and upset tum. However, after cooking the protein in the fruit is broken down and I have no symptoms at all. Do consider is it a true allergy or intolerance, allergy tests can help, but can give false positives and false negatives. Look at the symptoms, possibly keep a food diary and make an appointment to see your GP.
