Those with dairy / egg free kids - what are your staple meals?

My twins are almost one and both have CMP and egg allergies.

I feel a bit stuck on a rut of the same old recipes atm, so I'd be curious to see what other people have. They're good eaters and are open to trying new things - My older DS's may be less receptive but we'll give it a go!

Hi JoJay. No allergies here but DH is intolerant of egg and dairy so most of our meals need to suit this diet. I find the alpro soya cream is a godsend, cooks well in place of normal cream - so you don't just have to do tomato-based pasta dishes. And the 'pure' range of soya margarine is fine for things like mashed potato instead of butter. And I use olive oil on roasts.

I guess our main meals are usually casseroles/stews/tagines, spag bol, chilli, shepherds pie, and fish/meat in various forms with potatoes and veg.

Luckily he doesn't seem to miss cheese or cakes; I'd be desperate in his situation!

Hiya,
Same as topsmart. Spaghetti Bol is a big favourite with everyone. We've recently got a slow cooker and it goes down brilliantly with DD (9 months) less so with DS (5) who's more choosy.
I'm in a similar situation so would love to swap ideas if you come across anything that works well.

Off the top of my head, recent discoveries have been mushed up broccoli and houmus for sandwiches - high calcium and really yummy surprisingly! And we make a Chinese rice which the children love, with cooked chicken, lardons, different coloured peppers, peas and a drizzle of sesame oil at the end... works like egg fried rice without the egg and we add soya sauce (tamari if wheat free) for the older one and grown ups. I'm attempting home made sausage rolls with DF puff pastry this week... desperately trying new things!

In terms of puddings, Bessant & Drury ice cream is delicious!!! I'm going to try to make orange jelly with calcium enriched tropicana this week... fingers crossed :)

Fish pie (use milk alternative to make creamy)
Fish cakes (leftover mash, tinned tuna and sweetcorn, bit of alpro cream, roll in breadcrumbs and fry up)
Pasta - bolognese, tomato and tuna, creamy mushroon and bacon
Casserole - chicken or sausage with mash
Roast dinners go down well
Chicken pie with left over chicken from roast, make sauce creamy with alpro cream. Leeks or Mushrooms although mine pick any veg out!

Puds - semolina / rice pudding with your choice of milk. Bananas and custard. Fruit crumbles or pies (mine love pastry)

We are very soya dependent and use alpro cream, custard and yoghurt a lot.

we are soya milk nut egg yeast extract bean free for evening meals.

I make chicken pie as well, using milk free sunflower marge.

spag bol

roast dinners are ok and easy.

pork meatballs with roasted veggie sauce and pasta.

honey roasted chicken with veg and pasta.

bbq chicken with jacket potatos , salad .

homemade chicken nuggets (with crushed cornflake coating) and homemade potato wedges.

daughter has recently made her own chocolate birthday cake which is milk egg soya nut free.

My DS is dairy intolerant and won't eat egg... His main meals are usually meals that freeze well (i work ft and cant be arsed to cook everyday). They are rice based- rice and lentil (Indian dal), or rice with a mild chicken or veg curry. The other thing that goes down well is stir fried rice or stir fried noodles and cous cous, where you can chuck loads of veg, meat and tofu in and it's all fairly well disguised.

I've also just thought - if legumes are ok, we eat lots of pulses... mainly lentils - cheap, easy and full of iron. Kids love them. I chuck in some chorizo or sausages for extra calories which is the one of the things I find lacking in many dairy / egg free meals.

Thank you everyone - some good ideas here. I like the sound of Maz's chinese rice, and Eragon's bbq chicken. I can see everyone liking them.

I hadn't thought to use soya cream in cooking either - I've had it on puddings but not used it as an ingredient, so thank you. I made a nice chicken pie the other day, making the sauce as you would normally make a white sauce, but using vitalite, and half soya milk, half chicken stock. I discovered today that Aldi's ready rolled puff pastry is dairy free, so I might try some variations on this theme.

Otherwise, my staples are fairly standard - spag bol, meatballs, roasts, sticky salmon, casseroles, sausages etc etc.

Heliotrope, thanks for the thoughts on puddings too. I tend to be a bit rubbish at puds and usually give them fruit or a biscuit, but as they get older and bfeed less, they could probably use the calories of a proper pud. Soreen's banana or apple and sultana loaf go down well as puds, in case no-one has discovered them yet!

Oh bless you! I looked at Soreen loaf when DD was diagnosed as I thought I remembered it from when DS was dairy free but I must have picked up the fruit loaf which had whey and didnt think to check the others - just added a banana loaf to online shop. Sure DD will be very grateful. TVM.

Korma using coconut cream instead of cream/nuts

Lasagne - buy the value lasagne sheets as they often don't contain eggs. I use oat milk for the white sauce with tofutti cheese melted on top.

Mushroom strogonoff - use tofutti sour supreme (from goodness direct) or oat cream for the sauce.

Shepherd's pie with vitalite and oat cream in the mash.

Pasta, bacon and veg with tofutti soya cream cheese mixed in.

Tofutti stuff is a life-saver for being able to recreate most dishes. I have even managed a dairy-free cheese cake!!! At christmas, dairy-free, egg-free christmas cake is also possible. A tip is to look to the value ranges as these often do not have egg/dairy, but the more expensive ones do.

-lamb stew

-enchiladas (with tortillas and without cheeee)
