Antibiotics at birth

Do any of you believe that this has caused you baby's allergies??

There is no history whatsoever in my or my partners family of allergies and our other little boy can eat anything.

My 8 month old was dropped in the pool by midwife and had to be rushed to hospital and was on antibiotics before I even had a chance to breastfeed him :(

He is allergic to dairy, soy, and egg so far!

Also has anyone tries a probiotic??

Thanks

Can't see how antibiotics could cause dairy, egg or soy allergies.
On the upside, my eldest had the same allergies, and grew out of them all, so there is hope!!

Well because antibiotics kill all the good bacteria and all the bad and can cause something called leaky gut!

Anyway, how old was your little boy when he grew out of it and did they have to drink Neocate??? My little boy screws up his face at it!

Never had neocate cos was exclusively BF till 1 yr old and I was dairy and soy free, tried the neocate but couldn't get them to take it. I have no allergies either and nor does my DH. My LO didn't have any antibiotics, and was BF, and still had the allergies. Whether it caused or not mind, there's not a lot you can do now, and I guess they must have needed it (how on earth did the MW drop them in a pool? Was it a water birth at home?)

purplepansy · 16/07/2012 20:23

Sorry, to answer your question, they were tested at about 18 months ( I think it would have been older, but my stupid DH had given them brioche thinking that it didn't have milk or eggs in...duh...and so I asked the docs to test them sooner as they had been fine). Probably not the best idea though!!

queeniebee · 16/07/2012 20:33

Oh I really hope he is allergy free by that age! What did you give him after 1 because I think I will end up breastfeeding till then?
Been breastfeeding continuously for the last 3 years and need a break!

Yes water birth at home. I had shoulder dystocia and had to get out of the pool but when i went to step out he fell in and the midwife didn't catch him. She was young and panicked I think.
Blamed me for holding on to her getting out of pool!!

Will be making a complaint about her but have not had a chance as I have been exhausted by baby's allergies.

My ds had antibiotics at birth and doesn't have food allergies, just dust mites, cats and pollen.

Dd didn't have antibiotics and is allergic to egg and milk so in our case antibiotics weren't the cause.

My allergy nurse has a theory about babies that were given a top up of formula in the first few days but were then ebf. Certainly my dd had one small ff at 1 day old then was breast fed til 10 months. Ds didn't have formula til 5 months. I'm not sure theres enough evidence or if any actual studies have been done though.

DS had antibiotics 3 times before he was 3 months old. I don't think it caused his allergies though - he was given antibiotics because of his allergies. He was showing clear signs of allergy at just a few weeks old, but his wheezing was misdiagnosed as a series of chest infections. It was only when I started an elimination diet (breastfeeding) that his wheezing and eczema started to improve.

DS was given formula twice in hospital when he was 2 days old, and I have often wondered if that triggered his allergies (leaky gut theory). I'm currently 24 weeks pregnant with DS2 and will be writing 'no formula' in massive letters on my maternity notes...

I'm not sure about the evidence for probiotics and allergy generally, but I do know that breastmilk contains probiotics which are perfectly designed for your baby. There might be risks in introducing 'artificial' probiotics so early, so if you are planning to breastfeed I would just stick with that for now.

Here is some information about probiotics.
