Hi just thought I would post in the hope people might have some advice as I don't suffer from allergies so not too clued up. I waited until 6 months to wean and until the last day or so had just been offering veggie sticks and rice cakes.

I just rushed to the GP with my heart in my mouth this evening as ds started scratching and developed a rash on his chest and back shortly after eating a little of a portion of "all good stuff" swede, app there is nothing but 100% veg in each frozen portion so I am really surprised that he is allergic to it. The GP thinks it is likely that it was the food. The only other things he has had today are some rice cakes, baby rice, "all good stuff" carrott and a very little amount of wheat free porridge.

DS has also been diagnosed with eczema this week. The Gp is admant it is not related to formula but i am not so sure - thinking back his skin became dry after I introduced one bottle of formula a day then much worse in the last week or so when I introduced a second. Can anyone tell me about dairy free formulas in particular if there are any not made of soya?

Also the various creams have been helping his body but since using E45 on his cheeks they seem to have got drier and redder is there a better cream for the mouth area?

Thanks for any tips Smile Smile.

I have just seen this, how is your DS doing?

About creams, Aveeno is a very good one, if that doesn't work, the most effective for DS's eczema is Eucerin 10% urea.

About the eczema, it may be difficult to know what may be causing it (it may be everything from a response to formula to changes in the weather). DS was much better on Aptamil formula, but now we know that he is allergic to milk and the only milk derivate he can tolerate is Casein which is the base of Aptamil, so whether this formula would be good for your DS or not depends only on his own characteristics.

I really don't know what is "all good stuff" but suopose it may be frozen vegetables. My suggestion is to avoid them as much as you can, DS is allergic to soya, milk and other things and I can say that he's definitively much better on freshly cooked vegetables even if we freeze them afterwards, many times frozen vegetables that seem quite "safe" have been added things that are a very allergic child may not tolerate well (in our case is soya added under the guise of vegetable protein/hidrolyzed oils, or milk added as whey or in poweder. Hope that helps

Thanks, I will ask the GP about that cream instead of the E45 as his face seems drier but less red without it (been using nothing just incase the E45 might have caused the rash but was planning on using it again tomorrow). Is oilatum (sp?) generally ok in the bath?

I got some nanny goats milk based formula which he seems ok with but will think about getting aptamil next time as it is about half the price!

I have just given him baby rice and rice cakes so far and he seems happier, think I will just have to be disciplined and introduce things slowly and steadily. I am thinking about ringing the Good Stuff company as the Gp says food colourings can cause a reaction the ingredients do state 100% swede but maybe something could have found its way in. Bit of a mystery really.

Felt really guilty and anxious for ds yesterday but today things seem better and I feel refocused about weaning so maybe it wasnt all bad.

Thanks for replying Smile

You also have to consider that it may be the swede in conjunction with the formula milk.

Personally I'd keep breastfeeding, the hassle is honestly less than the combined hassle of bottlefeeding (washing, making up, heating up) plus dealing with eczema.

buy a 'real' swede, cook it and puree it and try that.

gegs73 · 04/03/2006 09:25

Could just be that swede doesnt agree with him. When I weaned my ds at 6 months, he always had a funny reaction to carrot home made puree which at the time seemed really odd as lots of people wean on it - screaming, runny poo etc etc. As I introduced more food, he seemed fine on all other veggies, so I just avoided carrot. When he reached 12 months I tried him again and he was fine. Maybe just try him on some different veg not swede for a while and try re-introducing it in a few months time.

my son had formula at seven months and immediatly had a reaction.for an answer to your milk question....my son is on a prescription formula called PEPTI JUNIOR (made by c&g but can only be given on prescription as far as i know) as he would not take soya milk.just ask your gp about it and push at a trial of it if you have too.i have spoke to many parents now that have gone from bf to formula with problems.my son can have no foods with cows milk.to make up his calcium intake,he eats plenty of brocholi and also has soya yoghurts.it does sound more like milk allergy than the veg.i hope this helps.good luck.i will keep check on this one.see how it goes with your gp xx

Hi all Smile

DS' skin on his face feels slightly softer when I rub my cheek against his, surely the goats milk can't work that fast!

Thanks for the recommendation Bhw, there is a good doctor at my surgery who has had children and seems up on things like this so I will try and get an appointment with her. Knowing London for non emergencies that will mean a couple of weeks wait but I can see how things go over that time.

I didn't add any formula to the swede, but it did say from 7 months so maybe he was a little young for it? I will give it a bit of time and try him on some real swede as a tester to see if that really was the cause as it is entirely possible it was a fluke but best to know probably.

Oh bbba I agree about breastfeeding, thing is I keep getting infections and have a painful latch so the break of dp giving a bottle before night feeds is a relief Grin also returning to work in 2 weeks - yuk! and not sure i could express enough for mixing with food as well as the extra bottles.
