Slight kiwi allergy - issues now with bananas?

Anyone else had this?

2.5 y.o. DS has a slight reaction to kiwi (and coconut) - skin prick tests gave a hive of 2mm. He is also allergic to hazelnut and peanut (hive size 3 or 4).

However, he's recently started to react to bananas too - the eczema around his mouth gets really red and sore and he starts shrieking. We've stopped giving him bananas for now. Up till the last month or two he's always been fine with them.

I've read that problems with banana can go alongside problems with kiwi. Is it likely that there's a connection, or just coincidence? We're off to see the paed next week to discuss the results of the skin tests, and I think I should be asking for more.

He is also getting a red face from cheese on toast, pesto and egg mayo, although not so badly.

His eczema is generally improving, so I'm surprised if it's just contact irritation on the skin.

There is a connection. I am allergic to latex & kiwi. Anything I read warns against banana & tomatoes too.

has he been tested to egg?

or had any problems with raw or partially cooked egg?

also, pesto often contains traces of other nuts, and you have a confirmed allergy to nuts, so for the time being i would avoid and mention to doctor.

The cheese irritation (if ok with milk) could be the histamine content, which can cause problems for some. mild cheese contains less, and sometimes if cooked , say within a cheese sauce is eaten without problem (melted/cooked cheese etc)

I would take care to avoid all kiwi and bannana and add it to your allergy list.

There has only been one study on kiwi , in southampton some years ago.
kiw has a link to tree pollen and latex allergy. This doesnt mean your child is latex allergic, many, like my son are allergic to kiwi without being latex allergic.

Thanks. He's not been tested for egg and as far as I can tell, hasn't had any particular problems with it (though he doesn't really like any form of egg other than as egg mayo, so it's hard to be sure). His eczema has been so up and down that it's been difficult to pinpoint the effect of foods.

He's not had egg lately and his eczema happens to be better than it's been for months (though it has been improving steadily following a change to his treatment). I might try giving him egg mayo tomorrow and see if it has any effect, so I can talk to the paediatrician about it next week.

That sounds probable about the cheese. Again, it's hard to be sure as he doesn't like milk and doesn't like (raw) cheese, but he seems to be fine with milk in porridge, yoghurt and cream cheese.
