Please help with advice about probable allergy (milk and or wheat) in 10 month old

Dd probably has milk and wheat allergy. She has had several reactions since starting weaning.
On dietician advice she has no milk products or wheat. I've also been avoiding both (bf'ing)
Her reactions have not been severe so far (facial rash, mucasy, sometimes sick, poor sleeping), but yestrday I ate dairy and wheat (at family wedding, no alternative available, felt it wouldn't be too bad!)
Since last night dd has had rash all over face, chest and back, she's been very mucasy, this morning her whole face was swollen and last night she was crying a lot and very wriggly. She bit me a lot when I tried to bf her, which I've just read can be a sign of having trouble swallowing.
She's been given piriton last night and today to help.
I'm worrying now that this reaction is more severe and it's only off something I ate, not even what she ate!

We are still waiting on the referral for a blood test for her. I'm going to phone on Monday to chase it up.

Can anyone advise whether I should request a blood test or the skin prick test?! Which is best?

I'm home now and pla Ning on giving her a bottle (neocate) tonight to try and help... As she doesn't eat s lot and bf's a lot still Any other advice?

Hello Catsu

Sorry to hear that your little one is reacting too what you're eating. :(

It sounds like you're doing everything you can.

It might be worth giving your DD an extra dose of piriton every 6 hours for 24 hours to make sure that the reaction doesn't flare up again.

Also, as you've eaten suspect foods, it might be worth expressing the milk and throwing it away and give your DD neocate for a couple of days to make sure it's cleared your system. I'm no expert in breastfeeding so hopefully someone will be along to advise on that. I didn't have much luck with feeding either of my kids and didn't manage more than 3 months with either.

In terms of what tests to ask for, you really need to be asking to be referred to a pediatric allergist. They will then probably do the tests that are necessary, so probably skin prick and blood tests.

It does sound like you DD is reacting to something and facial swelling and problems with swallowing should be taken seriously. If you ever experience this again, it might be worth taking your DD to your A&E dept. If your DD was able to take piriton then that is a good sign,

Your GP has to refer you if you ask and hopefully he/she can hurry this through for you.

I hope both you and your DD have a good night.

Take care

Thsnks for your advice.
I've been giving her neocate only since last night and piriton.
Her rash seems to be extending down her body though snd she seems not quite right at all. Her face still looks a bit puffy.
I've made an appt to take her to the out of hours doctor this afternoon to get her checked out as it seems odd that a reaction can last this long, so am wondering if it's something else?!

Good Luck with th out of hours doc.

If the rash is moving around her body, it might be a virus induced urticaria.

I hope you get some good advice and some answers soon.

Can I ask why you are giving her neocate? Breastmilk is absolutely, definitely, without doubt, the best thing she can have right now. More so if she isnt having 'regular' dairy else where.

Of course it is possible for allergens to get through your milk but its tiny. So tiny. Ill effects happen. But your daughters were so extreme Im thinking it must have been direct contact of the allergen, as opposed to osmosis (via bm).

What Im trying to say is, it touched her. Her lip or eye especially to cause that reaction.

I have a 13 month old who is breastfed, he is anaphylactic to milk and eggs and lots of other minor allergies.

I cut dairy out my diet because it messes with his guts and skin (eczema). Hes had reactions similar to your daughters but its direct, from my hands or lips (kissing him/his mouth after Ive eaten an allergen).

Its really tough these first few weeks, keep asking questions here, anywhere you can it'll help.
