Some good news

I thought I would share with you as I know hearing there was light at the end of the tunnel helped me when I had a scratching, hivey, reacting baby!

Dd1 (now 5.5) was diagnosed with very severe eczema by the eczema clinic at the age of 4 months. She looked like a little reptile she was so covered (the only clear bit of her was her ears and cheeks. She had allergic reactions to egg, lentils, strawberries and pineapple. Anyway to cut a long story short yesterday she had a successful egg challenge in hospital - her last remaining allergen. She is now food allergy free!! She is also almost totally eczema free (just occasional spots if she is ill or under the weather). She still has a dust allergy (which getting on top of helped hugely with the eczema) but no asthma so far.

Dd2 (now 3.2) had a successful baked egg challenge. She still has her CMP and lightly cooked egg allergies. She still has an epipen.

Another unexpected positive is that I have been terribly ill this year (and sadly still am although very slowly making improvements) (obviously this isn't the positive) and so to minimise work dd1 and dd2 have changed from packed lunches to school/nursery dinners.

I have been too ill to look after the dds so we have also had to trust anyone who can help us to look after the dds (granparents, friends etc) and no-one has made any mistakes and the epipen has not been used. Obviously this is a truly horrible situation in terms of my health but very positive in terms of allergies.

Anyway I just wanted to share, since the 'growing out' stories offered me a beacon of hope when I didn't know what to do with my itchy scratchy reactive baby!!

Thanks bb. its going to be a long road for me but determined to get there.
I haven't been on here for ages - i hope your ds is doing OK. How's school dinners working out? He has more allergies that dd1 but her school have done great.
The biggie has been dd2's nursery. They were terrified to start with but now she has a fab array of different foods there.

Hi Whelk, I'm sorry to hear you are still ill, hope you start to recover soon.

Fabulous news about your dcs. You're right, positive news does give some hope to the rest of us!

Whelk · 29/06/2012 16:49

Hi CasaBevron - i spoke to you on the post viral thread didn't I?

Unfortunately its turned into ME as I feared, but I am now mostly out of bed and doing more in the house/with dds but still struggling with getting out anywhere. All really rubbish tbh so the good allergy news was very welcome.

Yes you did Smile Horrible luck that it was ME, but it's great to hear that you are up and about a bit. I suppose each step, even if it's a tiny one, is at least a step in the right direction. And great that your girls have been so well cared for. I hope you all continue to make good progress!

greenbananas · 29/06/2012 17:59

Whelk, I'm so sorry to hear you've got ME - that must be so hard and so frustrating for you. However, it's really good news about the improvements in your daughters' allergies, and that your DD2 has been kept safe.

Whelk · 29/06/2012 19:26

Thanks greenbananas. I didn't mean for this to be about me and my illness. Heaven knows enough of my life is at the moment!

Heres hoping all your dc grow out of their allergies!

Hello Whelk

Thank you for taking the time to let us all know the good news about your DD's. My DD is 4.5 and has a very long list of allergies and I sometimes always wonder if it'll be this way forever. Like you the good stories really fill me with hope and remind me to actually think positively.

I'm so sorry to hear that you're not feeling so good yourself. It's great that you're able to do a bit more at the moment and aren't quite so bed-bound.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your good news and I hope that you start feeling well again soon.

Lots of love and cyber hugs. xxx

Whelk · 29/06/2012 21:20

Hi Mumat39 - thanks for the cyberhugs. I need them at the moment!!
Dd1 seemed to grow out of her allergies all quite suddenly. This time last year I was smothering her in the usual eczema lotions and potions and her skin prick test result for egg was the same as at every test since she was 6 months old i.e. highly allergic. So its come as quite a surprise really.
Maybe the gods knew there was only so much we could take right now!!!!

Wow Whelk. That really is good to hear!

My DD has also had allergies since she was 6.5 months, so probably since she was born. The report from the allergist last year said that she wasn't showing any signs of outgrowing them which I found a bit upsetting really as up to that point they'd said there's a good chance that she would by 2, and then 3 and then 4 and then in her teens or maybe later.

I sometimes find myself wishing I could take them all from her so she could have a more 'normal' life but I know that probably would bring it's own issues.

I'm so pleased for you that you DD has had an improvement, as I'm sure it must be a load off your mind, and it sounds like you need lots of rest and stress is a horribly draining thing so at least it's one less thing for you to be worrying about.

Hope you have a lovely weekend.

good news on the allergy Whelk!

But you - poor you! Total sypmathy - I was out for a good 18 months post viral (parvo virus) - grim! I did a 5 day juice diet (quite high cal) to reboot my system and I really think it helped.
Well done sunshine - MORE CYBERHUGS!

Whelk · 30/06/2012 15:34

Thank you very much for posting about your PVF Topiarygirl. Thats just what I need to hear. Thank you so so much.

Mumat39 - yes it was all sudden. I think 5 - 7 is quite common age to grow out of it. I have to say dd coped very very well at school with a packed lunch and I trained her not to share others food. Her teacher was great too. I found it much easier than nursery with all the potential spills. That said egg is not too bad a one to avoid. Dd2's milk allergy has always been much more stressful.

Just saw this...that's wonderful, wonderful news about the improvement in the allergies! The idea of being food allergy free is almost too much to wish for at times!

As the others said, sorry to hear you've been having such a hard time with your own health. Hope you see some improvement there too.

Whelk · 03/07/2012 20:47

Thanks likeaninjanow - tbh we can't quite believe it. I can't quite make myself give her mayonnaise or scrambled eggs - keep making excuses to myself and putting it off.
Thanks for the good wishes about my own health too.

Hello again Whelk. Sorry for not replying sooner to your last reply. I somehow missed it.

I find it hard giving my DD anything new as she seems to react to so many things I'm really rubbish about it. Totally understandable in your case though as the last thing you need is the stress of that.

Hope you're feeling a bit better each day. Keeping my fingers crossed that you are.
Take care and big hugs
