well I am feeling:-

  1. sick
  2. anxious
  3. stressed

DS2 is allergic to a long list of foods, and I can't help but worry. We've been abroad once before, and are off to France again in 2 weeks time. I'll be fine when we get there, it's just the chance of a reaction on the flight that's worrying me Sad.

There's not really any point to this thread, but I can't really tell anyone in RL my worries as they'll think I'm neurotic.

Can you not just take him a packed lunch so you know what he's eating?

LynetteScavo · 26/06/2012 22:58

A flight to France is quite short. Does he have to eat on board?

MangoLangoTango · 26/06/2012 23:05

Not neurotic at all. We have been on several flights since DS's diagnosis now (though the bloody list of allergens seem to keep growing!) and my strategy for coping has been:

  1. Pack all epipens and piriton, then check, double, and triple check. In fact I am sure I checked on his meds more times than I did the passports.

  2. Pack enough food and drink for the journey twice over. Admittedly DS was about one at the time but the security checkpoint in the US allowed us through with his bottle full of drinking water after testing a small sample of it.

  3. Watch him like a hawk and I sat DS between DH and me so that there was no chance anyone could give him any food or him grabbing anything without us knowing.

I don't know how old your son is but it is doable, and the more times you do it the more confident you will feel. Plus, it helps to feel like we are leading "normal" lives. Hope you enjoy your holiday!

I'm pretty sure that most of us on here know exactly how you feel! We have a house in Spain so have obviously flown many times with DS (multiple allergies) and it does get easier but I do still worry. I always take food for him plus surface wipes to wipe down the tray table etc and a clean sheet/blanket to cover his seat on the plane so that when he sits down he doesn't come out in hives from food residue on the seat. I also make sure his Piriton and epi-pens are to hand just in case :)

Thanks everyone Smile.

He won't be eating anything apart from any food I take with us, but he has previously reacted to nuts when they've been in the same room. That's my worry - everything else will be fine. I'm probably being over anxious and nuts (hahaha).

I cannot imagine taking him longhaul Sad.

Have you spoken to the airline? Many will make sure nuts are not on sale if you let them know beforehand but there's obviously not a lot they can do about passengers bringing their own nuts on board other then making an announcement at the start of the flight. I would definitely recommend putting a sheet/blanket on DS's seat as I find this really helps avoid contamination.

We haven't been brave enough to go abroad yet!
I hope everything goes well and you all have a lovely holiday. :)

I haven't spoken to the airline yet (Ryanair) as I can't get through to their customer service line. It keeps saying they're all busy, and to call back later Angry.

I'm paying for priority boarding to allow for seat-cleaning-time. Smile
