Severe eczema and acrylic school uniform

Anybody here had this problem? The official school jumper is 100% acrylic and will no doubt aggravate the skin.

Can you order cotton uniform to match any pattern from somewhere does anyone know? Or any other bright ideas?

Can obv buy all the generic stuff from high street shops which come in a range of fabrics inc cotton, is just the official jumper from the school supplier that is stumping us!

could you do like my ds has to with his school sweater. He wears a long sleeved cotton shirt underneath it all the time as soon as the weather improves he ditches the sweater for cotton polo shirts.

KateUnrulyBush · 23/06/2012 18:54

I thought so, but the reception uniform is a short sleeved cotton top (even in winter!) as they don't like them to have to tackle buttons...

Thinking I will have to find someone to knit a bespoke cotton replica (x 3 or so) or line the sleeves with cotton fabric maybe?

can you get a cotton jumper in the same colour as the school jumper? its primary school yes? so they cant insist on the logo.

i have a friend whose ds has eczema and was being agravated by the school trousers, and she got a note from the dr (i think) and spoke to the school and he can now wear trousers that are cotton but not the right colour (the school has an odd colour uniform!)

or long sleeved cotton t-shirt underneath, again plain but in the school colour, just minus the logo?

KateUnrulyBush · 23/06/2012 19:07

I can, yes. I know they can't insist, but it's a small school and all the other children wear the official one. It has stripes on it so not easy to just stitch a badge on.

I think in a year or two it won't matter so much but for now I'm concerned about appearing to be different and standing out for the wrong reasons.

i know tesco will embroider logos on, maybe that is an option if you can get a jumper to match?

my friends ds goes to a school where all the other children wear the uniform (as i said its an unusual colour, chosen i am sure so that parents do buy the logo version as you cant get that colour without!) and i dont think he has any issues re being different? but i can see why you would be concerned :(

Have you spoken to the school secretary (or whoever orders the uniform) as suppliers often have a range of different quality materials that they offer? Schools often choose the most easy to wash and wear and order in bulk but essentially the supplier can embroider the logo onto anything. For example my daughters school order the sweatshirts/cardi's which are acrylic (economy range) but the supplier also does a 70% cotton one which we are going to get for DD. The school can put an order in and the logo gets embroidered onto it. This particular supplier also does long sleeve polo tops in 100% cotton which again we are ordering specially as opposed to the short sleeve ones. It was the fabulous school secretary who told me about this.
Good luck.

Anyone on here want a 100% organic grey school skirt (adjustable waist) age 7 from memory FFP?

KateUnrulyBush · 25/06/2012 23:14

Thanks for your replies :)

The secretary's response was 'well we've never had any problems with the uniform before and we have plenty of children with eczema...'

So not a huge amount of faith in her after that... It does sound worth trying to find out who the supplier is though and contacting them privately. Good idea, thanks!

Go to the National Eczema Society website, they've got a list of pure cotton suppliers. Not sure if they do school uniforms but it's perhaps a starting point.

Good luck, I promise you won't be the only mum with the same problem.

If it is a standard v-neck or round neck jumper shape, then I would put an ad in the PO asking if anyone would knit a couple for you, You might get some lovely Granny who would make up a couple in cotton for not much cash. Although the yarn would cost a lot. That's if no joy from the supplier.
