DD has missed nursery again. Will she be the same when she starts full time school in September?

We've just had a few stressful and exhausting days with DD. We were visiting family at the weekend and she was happily cycling on her bike on Sunday and fell off and bumped her head even though she was wearing a helmet Confused

She seemed fine afterwards but a few hours later, when we got back home, she vomited quite badly and emptied the contents of her stomach. As she had bumped her head I took her to A&E on Sunday at about 10pm and they said we did the right thing as the bump did look quite bad. They checked her over and we came home at about 2.15am. DS had eaten the same food as DD so I knew it wasn't anything to do with the food.

The next day she woke up early and was hungry so had a couple of mouthfuls of cereal but couldn't eat anymore. A few minutes later she vomited again.

They'd said in A&E to take her back if she was sick again, so we did. I have a Ds too, so had to get snacks and things ready for him to take with me. We were there for another 4 hours which was fine as they checked her over and said we could go home. It's a relief that she's ok and it's now been 48 hours so I hope that means that we're out of the monitoring closely time.

Today she has been really subdued and the bump is turning into a bruise.

So, as a result of a fall, she's missed 2 days of nursery(preschool) and will probably miss another day at least as she seemed to have some diarrhea today, although I'm not sure if that it anything to do with the bump. She mostly has a bout of diarrhea after an allergic reaction. She has missed so many days of nursery with either reactions or just bugs.

Anyway, I find myself wondering whether DD will just always be prone to missing school. She starts f/t in September and so far in nursery she hasn't managed a full half-term since she started in September. Things, whether they are reactions or bugs always seem to hit her hard and this incident with the bump is the same.

Is there anything I can do/should be doing to help her get over these sorts of things more quickly?

On the positive side though I do think it was actually a bit of a relief that for a change we weren't at A&E for an allergy related issue. I know that's sad but it was almost a good thing that we were there for a more 'normal' reason.

Ime this is very very common.
My ds1 never made a full term til he was 7! (sorry)
Ds2 started per school in April and has missed a week up to now...he had a nasty cough and cold and ATM has hayfever which I got some mess for today.
I think ds2 will miss more preschool next term with it being winter ans all the bugs around.
I think most people have this experience when their dx starts per school/school tbh.
Glad your dd is ok now.

Thanks Badvoc

I think I'm just a bit aware of the fact that whenever DD gets anything, she just seems to take alot longer than her nursery friends to get over it.

For example, this bump on the head and then being sick, I'm now just wondering if it might have been a stomach bug as she's also got diarrhea and so has missed another day of preschool and will also miss tomorrow.

I had heard about kids picking up bugs but I guess I didn't realise that it would knock them for 6 each time and result in alot of days off. I don't work so I'm at home anyway so it's fine that she's been off.

I suppose I'm also wondering if the fact that she is an allergic little thing that this somehow means that it takes her longer to get over things.

Thanks for your reply. :)

No worries.
You absolutely did the right thing getting her checked out - I would have done the same.
Hate to tell you but ds2 once had gastroenteritis so badly he was nearly admitted to hospital 3 times in a 2 week period....he was so I'll :(
She is still small so it will take her immune system time to build up, ESP if she is prone to allergies.
Tbh ds1 was off per school more an he was there in his first few months!

Similar sort of story for my DS who started nursery a year ago -- for the first few months he was hardly there at all! My DB's children, none of them allergic, also experienced the same thing. I think it's very common.
Despite the first few difficult months, I'm very glad my very allergic DS is at nursery being exposed to bugs and building up his immune system so that it fights what it's supposed to fight!

Thanks Garlic. You're right that it's important that their little systems learn to fight what they're supposed to fight.

DD's had a good day today. She's still very tired but I'm hoping she'll be able to go to nursery tomorrow.
