Are these nasty poos a sign of milk intollerance?

Not sure whether to seak advice in here or in the feeding section. DS is almost 22 months and the last few weeks has started having fairly loose, VERY smelly poos. I think the start coinsided with DS dropping his morning breast feed, at which point he started asking for milk to drink with breakfast where he'd previously had water. Two weeks ago we decided to try and drop the last feed (before bed) too and I've been replacing with a cup of cows milk as it was me initating the dropping of this feed rather than DS. I think the poos are now worse and am concious DS is having quite a bit more cows milk than previously, especially as he has also been going nuts for cereal and has been demanding a bowl or two of shreddies, with milk of course, when we get home from the childminders! Is it likely that his digestive system is just adjusting to lack of breast milk and more cows milk, or could it be a mild intolarnace? DS gets hayfever, occasionally wheezes, and is allergic to various antibiotics but no food allergies we're aware of. Severe asthma, excema and hayfever run in the family. My niece was allergic/intollarant (not sure which) to milk until about 5 years old.

Really just wondering if I should bother trying to cut down his milk intake a bit or wait it out a bit longer. These poos are not nice though!

Well there is huge debate over whether dairy can worsen ezcema asthma etc. The way I see it is that there r so many alternatives that if you think it could help give it a try. Alpro soya 1+ and Kara coconut milk are both suitable for a drink for babies over one year and there yogurts and ice cream available in soya too. As long as his diet is healthy there's nothing in milk you can't get else where :) sounds like it could be toddler diarrhea possibly. That's also to do with milk though. :) rice milk is not suitable as a drink for under fours x

Oh meant to say it was the poos that contributed to my suspicion my dd2 had a problem with milk. They were dark green very offensive ( almost acidic) in smell and her bum was red raw despite changing nappy straight away. If this is similar to what you r getting it's possible ur dc has cows milk protein intolerance .

Thanks caffinedrip. DS poos aren't green, it's more like they've regressed to baby poos - very yellow and sticky, but smell really foul. Thanks for the advice re alternative milks.

Think I'll give it another week and if no difference try reducing the milk to see if it makes any difference. He can certainly tollerate some as he's been having it since 1 year (we kept to a no dairy diet for him before then becasue of family hisroty of extreem asthma and other family allergies), just that his intake has gone up noticably recently.

My dd had the same, horrible yellowy baby poos at 18 months plus after i dropped breastfeeding and awful nappy rash! Had her referred and eventually blood tests showed an allergy to cows milk protein and soya.

Switched her to oat milk (cant have rice milk under 4) and cut all diary and soya (incl sya flour etc) and the results were almost instant! If she has dairy now she gets a rash/exzema on her cheeks and really sore genital area...

Ask for a referral but dont stop the diary until the tests as they need it in the system!

Try seeing your Dr. Not all are up on allergies, but you could ask for him to be tested.

Thanks guys. Poos still pretty grim! We're going to try reducing milk intake next week and see if it helps. If it seems to make a difference I'll take him to the docs and see if he can be tested.
