Chip shops? Yay or nay? Lactic acid? Nutmeg?

If your child was anaphylactic to milk, eggs, tree nuts and peanuts would you be ok with them having fish and chips from the fish and chip shop?

If not, are there any 'safer' take aways then others? Are there some I should avoid like the plague? Should I avoid them all?

Lactic acid turns up in lots of things (my can of cream soda?!) should that be avoided?

And lastly, is nutmeg safe for nut allergy sufferers?

Thanks.

No, we don't allow DS2 anything from the chip shop. Often chips are cooked in the same oil as items in batter, so there will be egg in there.

We don't get him any takeaways, other than Burger King. There's a high risk of nut contamination with Indian food, and my son is allergic to soy so Chinese food is out. I believe Pizza Express can cater for allergies, so you could get a cheese free pizza.

DS2 is fine with lactic acid, as it's the milk protein he's allergic to.

Nutmeg is not a nut.

Hope that helps!

We do use our local chip shop (DS is anaphylactic to milk, eggs, tree nuts and peanuts). We have checked the ingredients of the batter and it does not contain egg. There is nothing dodgy fried in the same oil.

We don't eat Indian or Chinese food because the risk of allergens in the ingredients / cross contamination is just too high.

The only takeaway (apart from the local chippy) that I feel safe using is MacDonalds because they have clear allergy information, good hygiene procedures and separate machines for everything. I feel guilty about all the sugar and salt, but hey, you can't have everything...

Occasionally we have used Burger King but I don't trust the staff much in our local Burger King - in the past I have had to send meals back after watching them preparing DS's food using the same greasy gloves they have just used to pick up cheese with.

I do tend avoid lactic acid unless it specifically says non-dairy. That might be a bit over-the-top though, because lactic acid is not usually a problem for people allergic to milk protein.

Depends on the chip shop. Dd also has severe dairy, egg and nut allergies. To be honest fish and chips is about the most common 'useful' meal we've found both from chips shops and restaurants. Often batter is just flour and water so totally fine. In our experience half the time the person you ask will not be able to answer the questions about what is in the batter- often they use a bought in batter mix and have thrown away the packet. Sometimes they will fry chips with unsuitable items like pizza (guess where we live Wink). but a lot of the time they are fine and is generally the only thing dd trusts from a restaurant.

Nutmeg I think is the kernel from a fruit in the same family as apricot and so there's a chance of issues if you have almond allergy... But it's not classed as a tree nut I think...?

Every chip shop we have ever been to only uses flour and water in their batter. We do ask before ordering obviously.

DS is allergic to milk, eggs, most legumes and tree nuts. We would never have Chinese or Indian or any other Asian food, far too risky although we do go to wagamamas as they have an ingredients list.

When we get dominos DS has the chicken goujons and wedges.

My DS is allergic to milk, wheat, eggs and nuts so I would never let him eat chips from a chip shop because they often cook the battered products in the same fat. In fact, I don't generally let him eat chips anywhere (other than Micro Chips) because of the risk of cross contamination. The main exception is McDonalds as I know they only use the chip fryer for their fries. Eating out is a minefield that we rarely attempt to cross but we do sometimes go to Beefeater or Table Table as they have allergy lists available online and there is one meal on the kids menu DS can eat (steak, chips and beans).

PS lactic acid does NOT contain milk: www.foodallergy.org/page/milk-allergy and nutmeg is a seed not a nut.
