DD2 is 2 weeks old and has been prescribed Nutramigen due to the fact that she has explosive diarrhoea about every 20 mins (it's fun at our house Wink). She has been on aptamil since birth.

How long should I give it to see if it works? Anything I need to know? Are size 1 teats still ok?

Hi

My dd has cmp allergy but was diagnosed much later than yours at 6 mnths. I think it can take about a week or ten days for all the cmp to get out of their system but you will probably see some improvement before then.

I'm not sure about the teat size, I think you can use the same ones as its not thickened

Have you been over to the allergies board, it's under health. Theres lots of good advice over there.

Hope your dd improves soon :)

Thanks MegMog- I will ask for this to be moved to Allergies.

I was surprised she was prescribed it so young, TBH.

After 24 hours on Nutramigen, her poo is much firmer and less explosive, but she seems to be crying in pain more often; I assume from wind? Can Nutramigen make them windy? Should I continue using it?

She might just be whining about it because it tastes like vomit mixed with sweaty socks. I tried it because DS3 was refusing it. It REALLY tastes foul. Apparently though, they get used to it quite quickly. DS3 now guzzles his down by the bucketload.

I BF him till he was just over 1yo, but I had been on a dairy-free diet since he was 8wo. When I had to suddenly stop bf'ing due to new meds, he had to switch to Nutramigen. Seriously, it does taste like vomit mixed with sweaty socks!!

It only took about a week for him to get used to the taste and stop whining. I'd stick with the Nutramigen, it is the one thing that has really helped DS3.

Tethers, my DS has a CMP allergy. He was prescribed Nutramigen, but it still contains CMP, although altered in some way to be less allergenic, so DS reacted to that too. You could ask to try neocate or nutramigen AA as these contain no CMP.

mmmmsleep · 02/06/2012 23:32

It can take 4-6 weeks to see full benefit but agree with trixy if any doubt needs neocate which costs a bomb so not first line but is marginally tastier and much less allergenic. Good luck. Please get referred now to a dietician as the nhs wait can be 6m so if referred now you might see someone for advice on weaning at a useful time!

My DC have been on Nutramigen for a good few years.

DD from 8 mo and I had to introduce it gradually byt swapping a spoonful of cow and gate for nutramigen every day until she was on it fully. If I remember rightly I think it took her about a week to start feeling better. But DD did have alot of colic for the first few months, so as mmmmsleep has suggested, try and get a referral asap but I'd be asking to see a pediatric allergist. They usually have specialist dieticians in their clinics and they are much better than just the dietician at the local hospital, unless the hospital is one of those that deal with allergies.

DD has alot of food allergies and I think her colic was maybe an indicator for this so I'd suggest getting a referral as soon as possible. As your GP has given you nutramigen he/she obviously thinks there's something going on, so strike while the iron's hot, so to speak. Your GP has to refer you if you ask.

If your DDs poo has firmed up after just one day, that could be a good sign as it means it's not going through her too quickly. If she is straining when she goes then obviously it could be constipation which isn't so good.

Does she cry all the time or at certain times of the day? DD's colic cry would start at about 6.30 and would last until about 9.30. If it is a colic cry then some infacol a fe minutes before a feed can help, but I'd speak to the GP about this too just to make sure there isn't anything else it could be.

I hope you're ok. A crying baby can be exhausting so I hope you're getting some rest and making sure you look after yourself and eat well.

take care

Thank you so much for the advice Smile

I will give her a few more days and see if the wind calms down; she's actually hardly crying at all, but is straining nearly all the time... you can see she's suffering. Poo seems runny again too.

Thank you mumat39 for the advice for me- even though she's not a screamer, I'm still knackered! Much appreciated Smile

Just to add that as your baby has had runny poos since birth it will initially be quite uncomfortable for her to pass 'normal' more solid poos and she might be a bit distressed when pooing but this should only be temporary as her body adjusts. A similar thing happened when mine swapped from breastmilk to formula.

My 7 month old DD was diagnosed with CMP when she was 3 months. We tried feeding her nutramigen but she refused to drink much at all, I think due to the absolutely repulsive taste. I went back to the doctor and asked for Aptamil Pepti which she has been on now for 4 months with no problems. It tastes the same as normal formula as it still contains lactose so no good for a lactose intolerant baby but for CMP it is worth investigating. She used to scream and writhe and kick around in pain during feedings and have terrible wind that she really struggled to let go of, but as soon as she went onto Aptamil Pepti she became a different child. Good luck.
