Epipen

I had to use my son's epipen on him for the first time recently. It was pretty nerve racking actually but on reflection I was pretty impressed at how I managed to take control and handle is reaction - he is allergic to wheat. The ambulance crew got there pretty promptly and gave IM steroids and more piriton again IM and we spent some time in hospital. What worries me is that I was hoping he would grow out of it however the quantity he consumed was pretty small and the reaction was a full on anaphylactic reaction Sad

Anyway, we are off on hols in a couple of weeks. It has just dawned on me that the epipen has to be kept below 24 degrees. We are going to hot climes! He is 14.2kg and Dr reluctant to prescribe Jext pen until he is 15kg. Any advice?

Well done for staying calm when you had to use the epipen!

You could try keeping the epipen in a coolbag - I think you can even get custom-made bumbags for this kind of thing, and somebody may be able to link to them.

Well done you! It's not easy. Coolbags are good - thermos flask if you're really worried. We travel a lot and I've simply kept them in the shade and we've been fine. As I understand it: If they do get too hot they discolour so you'll know if you need to renew.
Good point BB: take as many epi-pens as you can
hope you have a super holiday

Well done on being calm about it, I dread using my sons & hope I never have to. He is like yours, his peanut allergy seems to be getting worse. Has the dr gave any advice? Could you give him piriton everyday whilst on hol? Store epipens perhaps in a cool bag (even a baby's bottle cooler) or wrapped in a towel or something to avoid direct sunlight.

I have 5 epipens. I do tend to carry a cool bab about a lot of the time as I generally have to take food for ds most places. I also have his epipens in a medical kit bag (inhaler, pitiron etc) which is a bit like a oil cloth make up bag. I may look at seeing if I can find a cool bag kind of one which is not too bulky.

ggirl · 04/06/2012 15:02

the piriton and spacer is the pain
i still can't find the piriton sachets

anyone know where to get them?

okiecokie · 04/06/2012 15:06

That looks just ideal. Expensive though so may only get one. Anyone else use anything similar?

it is £££ isn't it.I bought it yrs ago and I'm sure it wasn't that much!

okiecokie · 04/06/2012 15:13

Ah yes, that is more like it - the bag only. I guess the tough tubes are to keep the epipen in but I have a couple of those anyway.
