Hi
The doctor has suggested we try non-dairy with ds (9) - ear problems etc adenoids. Do I need to cut out eggs as well?
Many thanks

do you think eggs are okay JTN, my ds cant have dairy even tho rast test came back negative. i gave him one mouthful of scrambled egg last monday and 5 hours later (slow onset tummy cramps)he started screaming and poor thing didnt stop till the next afternoon. id be very careful

swedishmum · 20/02/2006 18:29

Thanks. Will start off with just dairy as it's not going to give him a big adverse reaction, and think about eggs at a later date. I can cope with no dairy and lunh boxes easily enough for now!

dairy=cow's milk and cow's milk products.

Eggs aren't dairy but you can have a prob with both iyswim.

ok, this is a hijack, but do contact rashes with milk and eggs in 1yo tend to get better in a few months or last years? Ds is 15mo and has both atm. The next (second) hosp appt isn't till next month and he has antibodies to milk and peanuts showing from the blood test they do.

geogteach · 20/02/2006 19:26

DD and DS2 both have probs with dairy, I was told 95% grow out of it by age 5, DD is 2.5 and seems OK now but never drinks milk (has other dairy), DS2 16 months still has probs but never had contact rash.

geotech does your 16month old get the belly cramps after eating dairy

So how about sheep's milk cheeses etc? Will do some archive searching. And chocolate type substitutes?
Should have done more research before starting but we've had a bad couple of weeks and the first day back at school seemed a good time to start.

Found the chocolate thread. I really should join ds as it makes a huge difference to my asthma but can't find a milk replacement I like for coffee/tea. I'm sure I'd adjust to the taste in time.

Milk from other animals has a different composition of course, so some people are fine on sheep's/goats'/buffalo milk but not on cow's milk. Some (like my ds) react to all of them.

You could try cutting them all out and then reintroducing one by one? Tbh, I would ask the doctor to be a bit clearer in his advice.

How about a slice of lemon in your tea and black coffee? It's an aquired taste though...

Geogteach, that is v helpful and reassuring, thanks .

Keep eggs in, but don't use other animal milks for now.

Read all the labels of processed foods, and look for hidden milk, such as casein, whey etc.

swedishmum · 24/02/2006 18:07

Thank you - must admit it's much easier than when I made a half hearted attempt to give up dairy years ago! Can't believe the price of some of the free from foods though...

swedishmum - I was about to start a thread exactly like yours. My 4 yo DS has glue ear and enlarged adenoids and is currently on anti-biotics for 6 weeks before we go back to hospital for a hearing test. He's also having cranial osteopathy. I want to cut out dairy to see if it makes a difference to his breathing and glue ear so reading this thread with interest.

Has it made any difference to your son so far?

manitz · 29/03/2006 14:04

I had to cut out dairy, and initially egg as dd vomited anything up immediately if she had dairy and went purple with egg. Recently dd2 was having hearing tests (also didn't have dairy until 1month old) and it turns out she has glue ear. Out of interest when deciding whether to treat GE I had dd1 tested. She also has glue ear but as she's now 3 and has never had dairy (bar mistaken sips) but still has glue ear - although not significantly affected her development. wouldn't that indicate that it doesn't make much difference?

Hope that makes sense, realise not a scientific study or anything...

manitz · 29/03/2006 14:11

sorry posted last one with out reading all the thread. Carolina moon, my dd1 had contact rash and immediate vomiting. Rash has generally gone over the last year, though sometimes still gets parrot mouth. And vomiting is much more delayed, usually about 5 hours now. Also depends what it is ie. milk is more immediate, soft cheese/yoghurt also but hard cheese even more delayed. have gastro specialist paed who said that allergies mutate often like this and become a delayed reaction as they become less serious. Also is quite common for them to react less strongly to things that are further removed from the primary source ofthe allergy. Shes 3 btw.

CarolinaMoon · 31/03/2006 11:15

Manitz, thanks for that - it's reassuring to know it does improve.

I posted this on another thread too, so am repeating myself, but I'm not v confident about the paed allergist's advice I've had. He seems to think it's just an intolerance. I'm now worried I didn't make it clear enough that ds gets a nettle-rash type of reaction, not just a redness iyswim.
