Suntan Lotion allergy

My 5 year old DD seems to be allergic to all the suntan lotions which we get, even though we always get the hypo-allegenic ones.

Can anyone recommend any lotion which is good for those with very sensitve skin?

Sorry I dont know how to do a link but I would try the Avene Very High Protection Sun Cream.

I'm from a family with all sorts of skin allergies and we all find Avene products great.

Proderm mousse is the only one my DD can tolerate - now available in Boots. We are also trying a new 8 hour cream called Ultrasun as its paraben free - waitrose are the only high street stockist I can find.

There's another thread on here at the mo, relating to eczema - might be helpful?

My DD and all DH's family have eczema and swear by Sun Sense.

I get prickly heat and find greasy/creamy sun creams make it much worse so I use Riemann P20 once day - might not have high enough SPF for your LO though.

Thanks for all the suggestions, they are great. Will definately try some of these.

BlueBumedFly, I'm interested in Ultrasun for my DD. How is it going for you?

I've only seen it on line.

DD has multiple food allergies, and seems to get a rash after the hypoallergenic ones we've tried so I'd love to know how you get on with it. :)

I'm allergic to sun screens with a chemical barrier, so I have to use ones that have a physical barrier instead. I like the Neals Yard lavender sun screen, which uses zinc oxide as the barrier.

Zinc oxide isn't absorbed into the skin (chemical sun screens are), it sits on the surface. Because it isn't absorbed, it doesn't irritate or cause allergic reactions.

The downside is that it can appear a bit white (because it isn't absorbed), but it doesn't bother me. I'd rather look a bit pale than be covered in a rash.

Problem with eczema and things like suncream is that every child is different and what works for one won't necessarily work for another. The eczema society do an advice sheet on this www.eczema.org/factsheets.html and based on this I chose Sun Sense Sensitive 50 because as browneyesblue says, many are allergic to chemical barriers in sunscreen but this one is a physical barrier and no perfume. Sadly, it's pretty bloody expensive and I've not found it in the shops, only online. So far so good with this suncream but in the past I've found that DS seems fine with the suncream for a few weeks but after a while he starts reacting to it so I'm hoping that won't happen this time.

The Aveeno sunscreen seemed very cheap in Savers yesterday

Mum39 - 2nd day of face, chest, neck, arms and legs and all good. I am really suprised (and pleased). I got the 50 SPF in Waitrose, what attracted me was the lack of parabens which DD cannot tolerate. Even Nivea Kids makes her wrists bleed eventually with itchy ezcema so I'm holding out hope for success.

mumat39 · 24/05/2012 22:40

BlueBumedFly, that sounds promising. I hope you DD continues to tolerate it well.

I've seen it before but DD has always reacted to other sunscreen and I find them too heavy to wear and most of them irritate my eyes.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is the one for you :)

inmysparetime · 25/05/2012 09:49

I used to put emollient on DS before applying sunscreen and that stopped him reacting, as the cream made a physical barrier between skin and sunscreen.
Also, sunglasses and keeping sunscreen away from eyes really helped, as most of his reactions began with him rubbing sunscreen in his eyes.

We use Sunsense Toddler Milk. No problems so far for LO, very expensive thought but, needs must!
