Dairy allergy or milk protein allergy??

Sitting in the doctor surgery with my 6 month old as yesterday I tired her with a fromarge fraud and DD came out in which looked like hives under her chin! Then where ever she touched after that she came pout in little bumps on her skin!!

I though I would do my own test patch on her and put a little cows milk on her arm and within a few mins she came out with little raised bumps on her skin!! There has been no other symptoms.

Obviously she has reacted to something but is it an allergy or intolerance? And how can I find out if it's dairy or cows milk protein she has reacted to or are they the same thing?

TIA

anniemac is right, the correct term for dairy allergy is cow's milk protein allergy or CMP allergy and it does sound as thought this is what your child has. Was this the first time your little one has had anything with cow's milk in? You definitely need to get a referral for tests and an appointment with a dietician to help you with weaning.

She os ebf but did have some formula in the first few weeks! There was no reaction to that!! She's had butter with no reaction but she has had a skin reaction to yogurt, cheese and the test patch on her skin of cows milk!!

The doctor said that she isn't allergic as she would have vomited. Is this right? Its more like her skin has reacted to it as there where no other symptoms. She is going refer me to the paediatric doc at my surgery to see what she thinks!!

She has eczema to so she sensitive skin anyway!!

A little confused now!!

Just to add she has had other foods with milk in it but never reacted to those!

If she did have CMP would she not have reacted with my bm?

"doctor said she isnt allergic because she would have vomited"

What a ridiculous thing for your doctor to say. My baby had an allergic reaction to peas tonight, rash and hives all over his face. I guess your gp would say he was intolerant to peas because he wasnt sick?

Please see a different doctor, your daughter could be allergic to more things (or no more things!) and the best way to find out is an referral for allergy testing.

The same thing happened to us at the exact same age, despite the fact he'd had dairy before.

Definitely avoid all dairy now, be wary of soya, goats milk as well. Id also be wary of eggs and nuts just in case.

Sounds like a very milld allergy though which is good. Get some piriton prescribed too.

In answer to your last post (missed that) was the 'milk in other foods' cooked in? People allergic to milk can sometimes be ok baked milk (the proteins change). She wont be allergic to your breastmilk but if you have dairy ut may well have a negative effect on her skin if she suffers with eczema.

WhiteTrashed · 23/05/2012 19:12

Also, out of all the dairy products butter is the least offensive which might explain her being ok with that.

I reay should learn to read through posts more thoroughly before I reply! I was just keen to help you as I was in your shoes 6 months ago.

Agree totally that your GP is at best ill-informed (at worst, a total idiot!). Allergic reactions can take various forms but hives are pretty bloody classic. Some kids do vomit but others don't. I was told a similarly stupid thing by a GP "he can't be allergic because he doesn't have diarrhoea" when in fact diarrhoea is more likely to be a symptom of an intolerance rather than an allergy.

Re: breastmilk many babies who are allergic to cow's milk don't react to the tiny amounts passed from mum's diet into bm but others do (normally only mildly though eg worsening of eczema). And some can tolerate cheese or baked milk because the protein is altered but others can't. It's all a bit of a minefield I'm afraid!

Thanks for the replies, I've just noticed them. I'm having a bit of a crappy time at the moment with weaning at the mo. Ive been considering giving up bf and putting her on formula but not too sure if that's the right thing to do. And if I do what would I give her.

I guess it's all trial and error! Will try things with cooked milk and see if she is ok with that!!
