Dd is 2.9 has had awful poos since weaning. Has been on aptamil pepti. No change. We now have her on lactose free its stopped the frequency of poo but still very runny and yucky. She had blood tests anaemia fine, coeliac fine, white blood count slightly low but nothing to worry about.

We've been referred to dietician is there anything I can do prior to seeing dietician? We've tried cutting out all dairy hasn't worked! I'm at my wits end. She's not potty trained and going to be a real mission with yellow sloppy poos!

Hi Chundle

How long has she been on the Lactose free stuff? Sometimes a change of milk can cause this sort of thing. I remember when we changed DD's milk in the early days that she had about 2 weeks of this transition of really runny poop.

If it's been longer than that, then maybe you need to be referred for allergy testing.

If she has so many runny poops, it could possibly be soimething else in her diet. Is she also very windy? And is she sore?

Also, what did she have instead of dairy when you cut this out?

If she is sore, then that could be a sign of too much acid, and sometimes fruit can cause this in some children. I think it could be something to do with Frutose (fruit sugars) Intolerance. My DC were like that with a coconut milk drink.

I can't really offer any more help but hopefully someone will be along with something more useful.

Hi she's been lactose free since December so quite a while, before that she was cows milk and before that pepti milk. If we don't change her straight away the poo literally burns and blisters her bum its horrific it peels the skin off her bum! She barely eats fruit she's veryyyy fussy!! A banana if we are lucky!

Poos have been like this for over two years now, am hoping dietician may suggest allergy testing

That sounds awful! Poor thing.

Can you demand a referral to an allergy clinic? If she's had this for as long as that then you probably need to be seeing a pediatric specialist and not just a dietician. It might be worth speaking to the Allergy UK helpline to see if they can advise you on what sort of care you need. Unfortunately, GP's aren't trained to recognise allergies and sometimes you have to tell them what you need.

I'm sure a dietician will be useful but most pediatric allergists run clinics where you will also have access to specialist dieticians too.

My DD has multiple food allergies and in the first instance we were referred to a dietician who we were under for about 18 months. It was only after that time that I relised that we could ask to be referred to a pediatric allergist and the level of care is much much better. The dieticians we saw were really lovely ladies, but didn't specialise in allergies and to be honest I feel we wasted 18 months with them.

I don't mean to belittle the one you might see, but I feel it's important that you ask to be seen by the correct person. It's definitely a case of if you don't ask you don't get, unfortunately.

Sorry if I sound bossy. Really hope you get some help soon though. Again, my DD was like that and would get really sore if we didn't change her quickly. I remember one time she was so sore we couldn't even clean her. :(

My dd's poos are usually very soft and often explosive. I wouldn't say that she has a lot of wind or that she is in pain but I have worried that her poo's may be allergy related (she has allergies) and how we will manage potty training as she is almost 2.2. My dd goes through stages where she gets a very sore, raw bottom. I now use doublebase and sudocream at every nappy change. Since we started using this combination my dd's bottom has been clear. We got to a stage where even steroid cream wasn't being as effective. It was our Gp that suggested moisturising with the doublebase at every nappy change with barrier cream on top. I literally slather the doublebase all over my dd's bottom and round her pantline.

Someone on another thread suggested less fibre and more fat. We have switched to white bread and having less weetabix at breakfast. I found I difference quite quickly. She is back to having weetabix some days as its quick and she loves it but we try to give my dd porridge when we can as an alternative. I was quite surprised at how quickly my dd's poo's firmed up.

Could it be soya? DS has runny poo and bad skin if he has dairy or soya. Surprising how many things have soya in them too.
