Melon allergy?

My dd (2yo) ate a very ripe melon tonight for supper. The melon juice dripped all over her body as she was just wearing a nappy. She started saying her tummy hurt, then her legs and hands hurt and finally that her mouth hurt. She was quite distressed. I washed the juice off quickly and despite there being no hives I gave her piriton. She actively wanted medicine and a while later said her mouth was no longer sore. Do you think this sounds like an allergic reaction, despite no rash (actually her the eczema on her tummy was a bit redder) and no hives?

DD has a history of reactions so I may be over-sensitive. She is allergic to peanuts and has developed alarming hives on her hands and legs when tomato juice and pineapple juice has dripped on her eczema. She has twice been pin prick tested for tomato and passed both. She has had melon often in the past, but todays melon was particularly ripe.

Well, I don't want you to go unanswered, but I don't know. DS (aged 3) has had this sort of reaction to melon as well, so I don't even try to give it him any more. There is no major reaction, just a bit of redness around his mouth, and I have never given him piriton for it, but he is adamant that he doesn't like it and that it makes his mouth hurt.

When DS is so very sure that a food is bad for him, I tend to believe him, figuring that even though he is so very young he knows better than me what an allergic reaction actually feels like. However, I once had a bit of a lecture from a dietician about restricting his diet 'unnecessarily'...

My advice - believe your child. I have had allergic reactions to raw fruit and veg. It makes my lips and/or mouth itchy and sore, and sometimes affects the throat. Other times it just affects my gut. It is called oral allergy syndrome, I believe, though I've only found that out recently. I've had it for most of my life and didn't go to the Dr, because I didn't realise it was something that was medically recognised. I have just avoided the fruit that causes the reaction, but am now thinking I ought to take it further, as I once had a serious reaction to raw green pepper. Cooked fruit and veg don't seem to cause me any problems at all. www.allergyuk.org/oral-allergy-syndrome/oral-allergy-syndrome
