DS2 had CMP and we didn't need the epipen!

So, last Friday morning I made a horrendous error, and gave DS2 the wrong cereal Sad. Totally my fault. I don't know what I was thinking, and I still feel awful about it. In fact, beyond awful.

Anyway, the thing is, we didn't need the epipen?! Could this be a sign that his allergy is improving? Anyone have any experience with this?

He only had one spoonful, then started screaming and crying that his mouth was sore. He was spitting out lots of saliva/mucus and had hives around his mouth. He also had a cough, which was a worry, but didn't seem to come to anything. I gave him 5ml of piriton and 10 minutes later he was absolutely fine. Running around like nothing had happened!

That sounds so frightening for you, and I'm so glad you didn't need the epipen.

No idea if this means your DS is growing out of his allergies - hope so but I wouldn't count on it just yet. I've read on these boards before that reactions can be unpredictable...

I have just posted about my DS's allergic reaction the other day, which also was not as bad as previous ones he has had.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depends on how you look at it) the lesser reaction is probably to do with the fact that, due to your vigilance, he has not encountered milk for some time so his system was not on such high alert for it as it used to be. That is what our allergy nurse told her when I said much the same to her.

Now he has had this further exposure, another reaction in the near future could well be worse again.

I must also say that if he was spitting out saliva/mucus he may have been unable to swallow due to swelling of the oesophagus. That is what happened to my DS. If his oesophagus had swollen shut then it was bad.

Glad you didn't need the epipen though.

It was very scary yes. I didn't help that it was early morning - bit of a shock to the system!

I suppose I was just clutching at straws, hoping things could be improving.

Ah well...back to extreme vigilance! Poor wee guy Sad.

Easier said than done on the not beating myself up front. Every time I give him anything now he says 'are you sure there's no cow's milk?' Sad

Sorry, I have no clue on the using the epipens for sport! I'm guessing he knows how badly he needs them to be in working order, so I'm not sure what else you can do. My DS is 4 1/2 so maybe I have this to come. Could you ask the consultant to have a word about it next time you see him? That way it's someone else reinforcing the message.
