Why is Tesco's own readybrek unsuitable for milk allergy sufferers?

I've just realised why my little one had such an upset tummy, I had been giving him this porridge most mornings :-(
I had checked the ingredients and thought it was ok, but the other side of the packet says not suitable for milk allergy sufferers- why?

Erm, I suppose there must be some sort of milk derivative in it...

StealthPolarBear · 26/04/2012 14:51

Dried skimmed milk?

Marilyn1980 · 26/04/2012 14:53

what are the ingredients?

LowFlyingBirds · 26/04/2012 14:59

Oats, oat flor, vits and minerals.

It has 'calcium carbonate' perhaps that is derived from milk?

Sorry op, not much help.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 26/04/2012 15:03

It could just be due to production methods and not actually contain it. There's usually a list on the box that says contains : eggs milk gluten etc :)

Don't think calcium carbonate is the reason. It's chalk, afaik. Maybe it is dairy derived. I'd be surprised. Might be made in a factory that processes milk also.

Email them and ask them why.

There's a thread about this from when it changed. After contacting tesco it turned out to be due to a change in supply and potential cross contamination in manufacture.

Thanks everyone, bit of a mystery why he had an upset tummy then. Think I'll email and double check.

I rang Asda once (a long time ago), asking a similar question about their cooking margarine. I checked the small print on the ingredients when DS was sick and unhappy after eating it. It had become 'not suitable for milk allergy sufferers' because they had changed which machine it was made on. Although there were no actual milk products in the ingredients, the machine was not always cleaned properly between runs so that it had traces of milk on from the product which had been made on it previously.

greenbananas that's basically what Tesco said.
