What replacement milk for a CMPI BF toddler.

DD is 20mo, she is CMPI and still BF, I have not eaten dairy or soya since she was 8weeks old, when I do she cries at night, imagine colic, and her eczema becomes a lot worse. Even when we are both on a tight diet she still screams fir a hour every night 11pm-12.

I have to go away and will try to pump for the morning and evening feeds for the three days I am away from her. But. I am concerned she won't drink the breast milk from a cup and this will be the end of BFing? If it is what milk should she go onto to get enough calcium?

We did have a dietician but she was genuinely useless, we do use Oatly enriched but I'm not sure it helps DD 's tummy.
Thank you

Under 2 if not bf, she should really be having a hypoallergenic formula. The likelihood of her taking it after being bf for nearly 2years is pretty much nil though as it is really horrid stuff. Personally I wouldn't bother trying as she is so nearly 2.

I bf DS until he was about 22 months and then he had Oatly, but that seems to not be good for your DD. Rice milk is no good as the levels of arsenic are too high. The other options are Kara(coconut milk) and things like almond milk, but I'd be a bit reticent about giving an allergic child nut milks. So I would try the coconut milk.

WhiteTrash · 21/04/2012 22:47

For such a short time Id just go for oat milk.

WhiteTrash · 21/04/2012 22:48

Sorry totally missed the bottom.

Rice milk?

trixymalixy · 21/04/2012 22:55

[http://www.karadairyfree.com/ I would try this]

You can buy it online and in health food shops, but I have also seem it in bigger supermarkets.

slowlyburningcalories · 22/04/2012 08:17

Thank you all,

Rice milk - arsenic levels too high as you say

Will investigate Kara, do already use Oatly but I am monitoring wether it causes her additional night time trapped wind, have some almond milk to try her with and will also check out coconut milk.

See if dietician can get go to prescribe nutramigen lipil 2

denialandpanic · 22/04/2012 08:29

we managed to get ds onto neocate at 12 months just a little at a time, by the time he stopped breastfeeding (over 2) he accepted it no problem. I have to add a drop of vanilla extract though

denialandpanic · 22/04/2012 08:31

It might just be worth trying neocate / similiar. pepti junior is most palatable but has some denatured milk proteins that reacted to :(. Gps will normally be happy enough to prescribe one/ two cans at a time for you to try. They will normally want you to try cheapest first (nutramigen) and work through until you find one that works.

lilbreeze · 22/04/2012 08:41

If it's just the lactose she has a problem with she should be ok with lactofree milk - can get full fat version from bigger supermarkets which is suitable from 12 months.

lilbreeze · 22/04/2012 08:43

Sorry I misread it. If it's cows milk protein then I would try soy formula - doesn't taste as bad as neocate / nutramigen so she's more likely to accept it.

lilbreeze · 22/04/2012 08:49

Sorry she can't have soy either Blush

With regards the breastfeeding aspect (as I have been no help on the rest!) at 20 months I would expect 3 days' break not to cause a problem anyway so hopefully you can continue breastfeeding anyway!

greenbananas · 22/04/2012 09:06

I'm not an expert on replacement milks, but just wanted to say that just 3 days away is unlikely to be the end of breastfeeding. Your supply might temporarily diminish very slightly but, after 20 months, your breasts won't give up so easily!

When DS was about 20 months, he got very painful thrush in his mouth and gave up breastfeeding for five whole weeks - I was very upset about it as I did not feel ready to stop breastfeeding a CMP allergic toddler and he did not accept any replacement milk during that time (although I did manage to hide a bit in porridge etc.) When his mouth got better, he tried breastfeeding again, and complained that there wasn't any milk there. I explained that if he kept on trying the milk would come back eventually, and it did.

Some women find expressing easier than others, and how much you are able to express is not necessarily a good guide of how much milk your DD is getting (babies are much more efficient than breastpumps). While you are away, you might feel full, and expressing a bit if you can will help to keep your supply up. However, don't worry too much if this doesn't happen for any reason.

Good luck with it all and hope you enjoy your time away.

denialandpanic · 22/04/2012 09:59

I forgot to say i went away for five nights (partly to see if he would manage and have a break) when ds was nearly two. he was absolutely fine with nanny while I was away and resumed feeding as soon as I came back. he just wasn't ready to stop. When I was really sick of it he stopped quite happily six months later (I know you don't want to stop just explaining story)

slowlyburningcalories · 22/04/2012 11:49

Thank you thank you for the stories of a gap not stopping BFing, I am not ready to stop and neither is she, I just want to ensure we have a possible alternative if she does just stop.

Bless you! I tend to agree with trying a hypo-allergenic formula, rather than Oatly, or other subs but your little one make not like the taste - my Baby refused it with her porridge around the 6 month mark. Others on here have previously suggested flavouring formula to mask the taste, so you could try that. Re. the cup, my little one loves drinking through a straw - she sees it as a great treat. Would yours?

AnitaBlake · 24/04/2012 12:39

We use Oatly, the dietician told us the rest just don't have the nutrients to be suitable replacements. We mostly just use it in her cereal, but she's slowly come round to drinking it too.
