Barley malt extract in cereal: dilemma

Does anyone know whether this might provoke a reaction in a DC with a wheat allergy? He has reacted to rye bread with hives, but I've never tried any products that contain barley malt extract. I'd like to expand our range of foods, particularly cereal, so that he can have iron-fortified stuff like Rice Krispies. He can have the Multigrain Rice Krispies which have no malt but he's getting a bit fed up of them. And he won't touch Tesco Hot Oats which is a real downer because it used to be his main source of calcium.....

Barley malt is fine for those with a wheat allergy but not for coeliacs (DS is anaphylactic to wheat and DD is coeliac). However, if your child has reacted to rye which is a different cereal to wheat (although in the same family the protein is different) then it's possible he could also be allergic to barley theoretically. DS alternates between hot oats and Oatiflakes (or are they called Oatibix Flakes now?) as these have added vits and iron (although no calcium sadly).

Thanks, freefrom. I might try the Rice Krispies. I'm worried, though, that he might have a delayed reaction, as his allergy to wheat seems to have progressed from immediate systemic reaction to a delayed allergy (we found this out after a mistake involving Oatibix Bites' new recipe containing wheat, which was followed by the worst night we've had in ages Blush and Angry at myself for being such an idiot -- the packet said in huge red letters NEW RECIPE!). Our consultant yesterday said we should avoid rye and barley, but I forgot to ask her about malt extract. Oh it's all so confusing. It breaks my heart seeing DS heartily eat something which then causes him such distress afterwards!

Barley Malt broke my baby!! We had a bad stretch where he would get better then we would trip ourselves up!! We thought we were looking at a wheat only issue until the Rice Crispie day!! He was quite sensitive to malt!! Kelloggs Rice crispies have malt in. Try Nature's Path ones which are gluten free.

BTW Kelloggs have released GF rice crispies in the US, hopefully it will come here soon!!

Hello

You'd have to check but I have a feeling that the Tesco own brand rice krispies are barley malt free.

My DD is allergic to loads of things including anaphylactic to wheat plus others and is fine with Kelloggs Rice Krispies.
