Yogurt or Fromage frais for child with Nut allergies

Hello

I need to try DD on Dairy and as she has multiple allergies including all Nuts and Peanuts, I've been trying to find some yogurt that doesn't have a nut warning, so is safe for nut allergies.

She is also allergic to legumes so I'm not sure about ingredients like Guar Gum which I believe is a legume. Does anyone know if this would be ok?

So far all of the yogurts I've looked at have nut warnings so I'm not sure what to try her on. I suppose plain yogurt would be ok, but I was hoping for an 'easy' option, so does anyone have any recommendations fro brands that we could try?

Many Thanks in advance

Just looked at the Tesco lemon yogurt in the fridge and that is made in a nut free area.
Otherwise make your own and add your own favouring. The lakeland yogurt maker is good, but you need a spoonful of plain yogurt as a starter. Don't go for the easy yo as it uses packets which work out expensive.

Unless its a recent change (within the last 12 months or so) Petit Filous and related products do not have nut warnings? In fact SDD used to have them to dilute the taste of the peanut flour when she was being desensitised?

Thanks Bruffin and BluebumedFly :)

I went to a large tesco a few miles away this evening and spent about an hour in the yogurt aisle reading most if the yogurt and fromage frais pack aimed at children. I found it confusing to say the least.

Alot of them (including Petit Filous I think), do have a mention of nuts either being handled in the factory or in the Not Guaranteed in the ingredients.

Up until now we have avoided anything that has any mention of nuts as this was what we were advised by DD's allergy nurse.

Tesco's had a few that had no mention of nuts but sometimes it was something else on the same range that did mention this. SO for example the Tesco Goodness for kids fromage frais tubes had no mention of nuts, but the Goodness for kids pots did mention the cannot guarantee nuts in the ingredients. It was similar for their Yoo range.

I also found some Yeo Tubes that had no mention of anything other than milk. But I think other Yeo things do have nuts mentioned.

SO if a product doesn't mention nuts, even if something else in the same brand does, can I trust it to be safe? Are manufacturers legally required to state if something might have nuts as well as if it does have nuts? Tesco's labeling of Recipe, Ingredients and Factory is a little frustrating as they mostly say cannot guarantee for at least one of them. So what should I do?

If I'm honest I don't really trust labels probably because I don't see it as being consistent across all the various manufacturers and not even across products by the same manufacturers, if that makes sense. SO understanding what should be on labels according to what companies are legally obliged to let us know would possibly help (i hope) Confused.

I will try and make my own yogurt, but I could really do with having some easy food options which is why I asked this question.

Many Thanks again.

DS is allergic to cashews only, as far as we know, so not as wide a range to avoid, but I buy him Petit Filous as I have scoured the packaging and website and can find no mention of nuts or any nut warning anywhere. I also give him Onken plain yoghurt (in the big pots) as there is no warning on there either.

CasaBevron · 15/04/2012 11:18

Meant to add, there is no legal obligation around 'may contain' but imo i think it is more likely to be over than under-used - many manufacturers seem to slap it on just to cover their backs. It's worth checking the websites of the big food manufactureres as they usually have a 'special diet'-type section with lists of their nut 'safe' foods.

Regarding the Tesco labelling, I fall on the side of using their stuff if it has the recipe and factory nut free but cannot guarantee their ingredients. After all, who can absolutely guarantee that their ingredients have never been near a nut?? Opinions are divided though, to put it mildly... Grin

bruffin · 15/04/2012 11:43

I agree with you Casa, not even Kingston will make that guarantee.

bruffin · 15/04/2012 12:04

That should say

Hello again

I phoned the 0845 number on the back of a pack of Yoplait Frubes and the lady told me that on their list all the petit filous yogurts and fromage frais pots were free of nuts and peanuts. She did say that the couldn't guarantee that the ingredients were. I asked her if the yogurt mentioned in the ingredients was something they make or buy in and she said that they make this so I think I feel ok with taking a pragmatic view that the Petit Filous stuff is probably ok and will try DD on this next. I asked if they also make yogurts for any one else and she said something about jungle beans NOT being suitable, if that is of any help to anyone.

Day 4 of the cheese test and so far so good.

Does anyone know how long I should wait before trying DD with the yogurt or fromage frais?

Many Thanks to you all for your replies Thanks

sorry, I meant she couldn't guarantee that the source ingredients were but the factory and lines they use are nut free.

mumat39, good news about the cheese test and good luck with the yogurt!

I think the jungle beans thing is a yoghurt snack pot type thing with little smartie type sweets in a pot on top of the lid, I think that is why it carries a nut warning - for the chocolate rather than the yoghurt iyswim? Confused
