DD coughing through the night, I think it's hayfever but anti histamine doesn't help.

She does suffer with hayfever and has a cough with that but her hayfever hasn't really started yet this year but she is just coughing through the night and wakes up tired and irritable.

I also get an annoying hayfever tickley cough so have always assumed that this is what she has. Anti-histamine doesn't really help mine, and doen't seem to help hers either. She is also more itchy than usual and has a few more oatches of eczema which is also something that gets worse when it's hayfever season, although she is an itchy thing most of the time.

Could it be something other than hayfever?

Is there anything we could try to help her get a good nights sleep? I've been trying to not worry about it but I think I might have to take her to the GP.

Thanks in advance.

DS also has a bad cough at the moment, but nothing with it. No temp, no phlegm, no other symptoms. It's quite a dry, croup-ey sounding cough, so we're going to keep an eye on it. Have given him some of the Benilyn tickly cough syrup (basically just glycerol), but it's not helping much at the moment.

Will be watching with interest to see if anyone's got any other suggestions, as it's really disturbing his sleep.

Night coughing is a common symptom of childhood asthma so might be worthing checking this out with the GP if anti-histamines are not helping.

2nd the suggestion for asthma - can be the first sign of it for some children and as you say she has a history of atopy.

DD2 had a night cough but as DD1 has asthma we would rush in with the inhaler to 'do' DD1 only to find it was DD2 coughing. She had a steroid inhaler (Clenil) for a few weeks and ventolin inhaler and that seemed to knock it on it's head. Just waiting to see if it rears it's head again this year (was about May time last year). She's not on the inhalers now just needed them for about a month.

Thanks everyone.

I spoke with DD's allergy nurse today and she said that as DD has recently had a cold to see how she is for a couple more weeks and if it hasn't improved to then see the GP and ask if we could try Ventolin, as it could be the start of childhood asthma, just as Freefrommum says.

Funnily enough she hardly coughed last night, just a few times, and this evening she hasn't coughed at all.

DD has been coughing soon after going to bed for a few hours, but the allergy nurse said that with asthma, kids usually cough in the early hours after they've been asleep for a few hours, so I'm hoping it is just the cold still lurking. She did wheeze with hayfever last year but I haven't noticed any with this cough.

Thanks again for your replies.
