Bf-ing an allergic baby

ds2 has non-IgE allergies to cmp and soy. He is 9 mths now so eating solids but still on about 5 bfs in 24 hours.

There is no test for non-IgE allergies, just trial and error based on food elimination and symptoms. I am so lucky I have an NHS paed dietician friend, who is really knowledgable about allergies, so I have loads of support and knowledge on the end of the phone. I don't know how I'd have coped with my unhappy, crying newborn baby otherwise, as I knew nothing about allergies. It wouldn't have crossed my mind.

I thought this could be a general thread to discuss the difficulties of bf-ing allergic babies, esp non IgE allergies as it involves so much detective work. I have found it to be so hard and even now I never know if or how often I'll be woken each night.

What are others experiences? Any welcome!

I said calcium and Vit A. Just checked and dietician actually said calcium and Vit D and K if you are not eating dairy. Not A!

Thanks for your replies. Greenbananas, I will try that pancake recipe soon. This morning, I couldn't think of what to feed dd for breakfast, so I gave her a jar of italian pasta and ham instead. Blush

I just assumed that dd is non-IgE. But now that you all have prompted me, I think I will check during her paed appointment next week if it is non-IgE or IgE. I guess it is better to be safe than sorry. If it turns out to be IgE, then at least I can be better prepared for it.

Did you all have the skin prick test or RAST test to confirm IgE or non-IgE mediated? Dd's paediatrician just took my word for it that she has cmpi. No further tests were done.

I am already taking calcium and vitamin D tablets. :) Thanks for clarifying anyway. Oh, another question (I am full of questions, aren't I?): are your babies taking any vitamin supplements? The dietician didn't mention anything about it and I forgot to ask her.

DD3 is wheat allergic (mildly apparently! Her eczema would say otherwise) I am currently bfing her (she's 2.6y) but as I am 2nd trimester she is dry nursing (no milk at all since before we found out she was allergic). I will probably have colostrum returning in 6-8 weeks so am planning to go wheat free from week 20 (2 weeks time) but I don't know how long wheat takes to leave your system. Anyone know?

I am hoping the extra IgA in colostrum will help heal her gut (has had bloody stools recently) so am keen not to wean her (plus DD2 is occasionally nursing so can't wean one with out weaning the other). I will continue wheat free for as long as DD3 bfs for.

DD3's paed. is hopefully going to do a dietician's referral for her but seemed reluctant so I don't know when that will come through (or even if it will).
