bandaids/plasters

DS2 has always reacted to bandaids that aren't Johnson's - itchy bandaid shaped welts/bumps/swellings. Put a Johnson's one on this morning over a scrape and same thing - itchy, welts etc etc. And it was from the same box as we have already used and no previous reactions.

Is it the adhesive (ie does the adhesive contain latex?) or is it the actual plastic band aid thingy? We have tried the fabric ones (having lightbulb moment now...) and he always reacts to those - must be the adhesive then? Does anyone know what is in the adhesive to react to ? Is it latex?

TIA

Dd has a latex allergy and gets a similar reaction to what you've described.

Why not try some latex free

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 03/04/2012 03:15

(posted too soon!)

Why not try some latex free plasters and see if it makes a difference?

Supermarkets often do their own brand non-latex kids plasters for a reasonable price.

It's probably the adhesive. Apparently, allergic skin reactions to plasters are particularly common in people with asthma and/or eczema. Both my husband and brother are allergic to plasters but not allergic to latex. They are usually OK with the hypoallergic versions (but not all of them, bit of trial & error).

Oooh that's interesting freefrommum, I wonder what they put in the adhesive? Confused

LittleMissGoodEnough · 03/04/2012 13:21

I'm allergic to the adhesive in fabric plasters, it could be that rather than latex. Some more details example here www.bedfordhospital.nhs.uk/upload_folder/patient%20information/allergy%20to%20colophony.pdf

Argh!

here!

LittleMissGoodEnough · 03/04/2012 13:23

and here are some low allergy plasters

itshotintexas · 03/04/2012 23:06

thank you all - i thought it was the adhesive rather than latex - he isn't allergic to balloons etc. He is particularly allergic to the adhesive on fabric plasters or maybe the plaster itself - I dont know !

We will try hypoallergenic plasters/band aids - am in US at moment - and if still the same, then hypoallergenic fabric ones. And hopefully don't run out of options!
